New Haven collector’s 30 cents could go for $300 at auction

|

Talk about inflation, three 10 cent notes, depicting Zachary Taylor’s Sec. of the Treasury William M. Meredith are expected to fetch $100 to $300 in an auction in Meriden on Oct. 20.

Meriden-based Nest Egg Auctions is auctioning off the Richard Hegel Collection of obsolete and historical currency and stocks and bonds. Hegel was New Haven’s municipal historian for more than two decades and he established a large collection of notes and certificates over 50 years.

While metals continue to attract investors trying to protect against inflation, some are turning to art, collectibles and history as part of a diversification strategy. So it should be interesting to see what old paper money auctioned off in this era will bring. The Mines reminds people, buyer beware when taking a gamble on auction items.

Besides the three 10 cent notes, the collection boasts notes issued from New Haven, Bridgeport and Hartford banks. Check out some of the other ones, below.
