Just in Time for V-Day: The Science of LOVE!

There’s a science to sex, love and relationships, according to a new book published by a Colorado State University psychology professor and her colleagues.

Relationship books are dime a dozen, but very few are written from the perspective of researchers using science to answer pressing questions, says Jennifer Harman, an assistant professor of social psychology at Colorado State.

Harman was one of 15 university researchers nationwide who wrote chapters of “The Science of Relationships: Answers to Your Questions about Dating, Marriage and Family,” which is available on Amazon.com.

“The Science of Relationships” (Kendall Hunt) is based on science unlike most relationship and self-help books, which are opinion-based and written by clinicians, Harman said. In this recently released book, scientists address 40 of the most common questions on such topics as attraction and relationship initiation, love, intimacy and attachment, long-term relationship processes, the dark side of relationships, sex and parenting.

The team – and other researchers with master’s and doctoral degrees – continues to answer questions at http://www.scienceofrelationships.com/. Some recent topics:
• Do men really think about sex every seven seconds?
• The birds and the bees as early as age 3?
• What are the high costs of parenthood?

“This is a fun book that is written in one collective voice but is grounded in research,” said Harman, who specializes in the study of how individuals think about and influence others. “We all wanted to make psychology more accessible. Plus, it helps my students learn more about what I do as a psychologist.”

The book is written in a format that most people can understand – simple, scientific answers to basic questions about family, marriage and relationships.

The authors feel that “The key difference between our book and the other books on relationships out there is that all of our contributors are relationship scientists and teachers at colleges/universities who are true experts on relationships,” the authors say on scienceofrelationships.com. “We take that expertise, add in a little research, and present things in an easy to read format.”

Cheers and enjoy!

Piggy Paint is Safe for Kids!

They’re as safe and non-toxic for children as a box of those iconic crayons. And Piggy Paint nail polishes put just as much color and creativity at kids’ fingertips, while offering peace of mind to parents.
Love this!
Piggy Paint is a water-based, non-toxic, odorless, hypoallergenic and non-flammable nail polish that delivers the thrills of a “big girl” manicure without harsh chemical ingredients or dizzying fumes. The brand was developed by Melanie Hurley, a mom of two who hated the thought that her daughters’ oft-painted fingers would eventually end up in their mouths. The point was driven home when Melanie’s daughter dropped a glob of traditional solvent-based kids’ polish onto a foam plate. The polish ate right through the foam, and Melanie’s quest began.

The result is a candy store full of colors ranging from flowery pastels to playful brights, made from natural ingredients. Celebrity moms like Jessica Alba, Tori Spelling and Marcia Cross are fans. Piggy Paint also offers a non-acetone, low odor polish remover, as well as Basecoat and Topcoat products that add to the polish’s scratch and chip resistance. It’s a great choice not only for children, but also for anyone who wants a natural, eco-friendly polish (it is also safe for use during pregnancy).

New Canaan Community Helps a Family after a Tragic Fire

On Sunday, January 15th, a New Canaan family lost their entire home and all of their belongings in a tragic fire that spread within moments and destroyed everything in its path.

While no one was hurt (although they could not save their cat) every single piece of material possession that the family had collected for over 16 years, was lost. This is a tragedy on so many levels – PLEASE HELP ME SPREAD THE WORD and HELP!

The only saving grace for the Lee Family of 5, in my opinion, is that they live in New Canaan. This town is filled with residents who pull their resources together and help whenever tragedy strikes – I’ve seen it time and time again over the 15+ years I have lived here.

One act of kindness, in particualr, is demonstrated by the Bank of New Canaan Bank of New Canaan, who established a charitable fund The Dan and Peggy Lee Family Fund and anyone who can help with ANY AMOUNT may donate-online!!

PLEASE HELP THIS FAMILY BY SPREADING THE WORD TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE SO THEY MAY REBUILD THEIR LIVES!!!

Thank you!

REMEMBERING Why We Celebrate MLK Day..

Why do we celebrate the holiday called Martin Luther King Day?

We celebrate the life and dream of a man of faith, courage and leadership — Martin Luther King Jr.

A special focus of the 2012 Martin Luther King observance is turning it into a day of service, with numerous community projects taking place across the country, including weatherizing homes, beautifying schools, serving meals and supporting veterans and military families. By turning the observance into a day of service, we advance King’s dream of economic opportunity, equality, and social justice for all.

King would have turned 83 years old on Jan. 15. Though his time with us was too brief, the wisdom of the messages he brought forth as a young man still hold today. He believed freedom was the one thing worth dying for, and ultimately, this freedom is what our veterans and our soldiers have served to protect. He believed that love could overcome hate, that justice required sacrifice, and that faith is the equalizer that surmounts all controvery.

Now more than ever, amid the worst recession since the Great Depression, we must take to heart King’s teachings to work together to achieve this dream. Duty to country knows only three colors — red, white and blue — and those who have worn the uniform of the United States Armed Forces have truly served us all and earned the honored title of “veteran.”
King never served in the military, but he commanded an army of Americans dedicated to fulfilling our country’s highest ideal — that all men and all women are created equal; an ideal forged in the heat of battle here at home in the struggle for civil rights and around the world in wars against tyranny and oppression. And he died for his commitment to this ideal.

“If a man hasn’t discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live,” King said, understanding — as every veteran understands — that freedom is not free. His strength and purpose are matched by those of the veterans we serve, representing Americans of all ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds. The key to our success is our diverse workforce with Americans from every racial and ethnic group finding increasing opportunities to serve veterans in rewarding and fulfilling careers.

King’s highest goal was to make all of us better than we are, to help us realize our highest possibilities as individuals and as a people. May God bless this dear and noble nation he fought so hard and died to improve — and may we soon share the radiant vision of unity he so wanted us to see.
