Help your backer shank

“Der gesuchte Verteidiger ist gefunden.” Of course it is, when you’re looking for Ryan Caldwell, as Dusseldorf apparently was. We hope he can be as funny in German as in English. You know what else is funny in English? Of course you do. Here’s the release, Babelfished:

The looked for defender is found. The 27jährige Ryan Caldwell will wear the leotard of the DEG METRO of STAR in the coming season and will strengthen the Düsseldorfer defense first for one year. Caldwell played past season for San Antonio in the AHL and for Phoenix Coyotes in the NHL. The link contactors in the year 2000 of the New York Islanders one gedraftet and one expects on coming Wednesday in Duesseldorf. DEG manager Lance Nethery: „Ryan is a solid defender, who will help our backer shank. “

Eurohockey led us to that, as well as Group-II free agent Geoff Platt to Ilves Tampere.

Mirtle’s on the Scott Gordon bandwagon. There’s always room.

Steve Tambellini, Jeff’s dad, is the new GM in Edmonton, although he’s GM under new president of hockey ops Kevin Lowe.

Petr Nedved, trying out for the Rangers? So reports Dellapina. Good gravy. What, ’cause it worked out so well in Philly a couple-three years ago? (Actually, the second commenter makes a good point: Teams have to dress at least eight veterans* in each exhibition game. And the Rangers’ exhibition schedule is a travel doozy. Nedved gives them some breathing room, at least, with little commitment.)

*-CBA 15.3(d): “A Club shall be permitted to dress a minimum of eight (8) veterans for any Exhibition Game. For purposes of this Section, a veteran shall constitute either: (1) a forward or defenseman who played in thirty (30) NHL Games during the previous season, (2) a goaltender who either dressed in fifty (50) or more NHL Games or played in thirty (30) or more NHL Games in the previous season, (3) a first round draft choice from the most recent year’s Entry Draft or (4) any Player who has played one-hundred (100) or more career NHL Games.
