Choose ‘Despotism’! — Fake Team Awards V

Thanks to each and every one of the 15 fans who voted this week. That’s one more than voted last year. One thing didn’t change: Both awards were decided by similar margins to last year’s runaways. But there are two new winners.

Fan Favorite went to a newcomer, Greg Mauldin, a player many of us had noticed in a Binghamton Senators (or Syracuse Crunch) sweater. He brought the same hard-working game here, earned an alternate’s ‘A’ and led (presumably) the team in scoring.

At the other end of the ice is the Seventh Player, awarded by your votes to defenseman Jon Gleed. As your Fan Favorite said back in January, “He could be the unsung hero every night.” When you’ve got the fans as your agent, begging for you to get an NHL contract, we assume you’re doing something right.

The Three Stars Award was also kind of a runaway for your Fan Favorite. Mauldin has been named a star in 15 of the first 79 games, including seven first-star picks, two seconds and six thirds. The battle for second through fourth is up in the air among the two goalies and Sean Bentivoglio, but they’d need another week and change to make a run at the top.

VOTING: FAN FAVORITE: Mauldin 8, Morency 2, Figren 1, Flood 1, Gleed 1, Haley 1, Martin 1.
SEVENTH PLAYER: Gleed 9, Mauldin 2, Marcinko 1, Martin 1, Reich 1, Wotton 1.
