Binghamton liveblog with afternoon bits

We’ll hang out here while listening to Grady Whittenburg tonight. Follow Jamie and Joy Lindsay (plus her in-game account) for in-house updates.

Bridgeport announced this afternoon that it has signed Northern Michigan forward Tyler Gron (hockeydb) (NMU) to an amateur tryout.

Looks from the tweet as if 1997 Calder Cup champion Pascal Trepanier is calling it a career.

And RIP, Mel Parnell and Ron Erhardt.

More closer to 6:30.

Probable lines and pairs, with help from Jamie; will add Bingo in a bit:

–Grady’s pregame is on now, at 6:35 p.m.

–The music that fills in the commercials on the broadcast has gotten progressively better. We’ve moved from some disco-ey things to “The Tide Is High” to, now, “I Dig a Pony.” Outstanding. Gron is the last scratch.

–Grady says that Gillies was upset that Francis Lessard wasn’t in the lineup tonight. No rematch.

–At 6:48, the Sound Tigers get caught with too many men, sending the Senators to their first power play. Had been what sounded like some good flow…. Actually, Grady says, though Binghamton had the puck, the Sens take the penalty. Bridgeport’s power play. They’re on an 0-for-19 drought.

–Gallant called for a rough near the period’s midpoint for Binghamton’s first PP. The refs appear to mean it this time.

–Gallant to go again for a slash on Parrish at 14:02. Bridgeport seems to have had the better of the flow, with a shots edge, though Grady had Poulin making a big save on Parrish in the past couple of minutes.

–Pat Cannone makes it 1-0 Binghamton, longside under the blocker from the right circle, per Grady, at 15:44.

–Jon Landry goes after Dziurzynski, sticking up for defense partner Ness after a hit, though Dziurzynski apparently gets the better of the fight.

–Binghamton leads 1-0 after one. Sound Tigers have a 16-9 edge in shots on the sheet.

–From Bill Cain on Twitter in Albany, Ben Guite took a puck in the head, skated off himself but hasn’t come back to the game. Guite was out for some time with a concussion. The Devils are all over Worcester. Second period on in Binghamton. Bridgeport box, by the way.

–An early Wiercioch hook sends the Sound Tigers to their second power play.

–The power play goes quietly; 0-for-21 since DiBenedetto’s power-play goal at Hartford a couple of weeks ago (the Newbury game, not the more-recent one).

–After a Romano/Rakhshani break in tight breaks down without a shot, Marcinko goes for tripping Caporusso at 15:47 of the second. Sens’ third power play.

–Grady’s not sure they got the right man, but it’s Backman for a slash two seconds after Marcinko gets free.

–It remains 1-0 Binghamton after two.

–The third period is under way.

–Grant called for a high stick 3:13 into the third to give Bridgeport its third power play.

–Sounds like Lehner made some big saves on that kill.

–Grady says DiBenedetto, who’s been around the net a bit, gives a little in-play claim that a shot went through the net. That’d be a fun coincidence, after what Worcester said happened up there on Sunday. Still 1-0.

–Petersson gets a penalty shot with 9:09 left in the third, taken down on a breakaway after Bridgeport’s all over Lehner. And he scores to make it 2-0.

–DiBenedetto apparently robbed again; “left shaking his head,” Grady reports.

–Binghamton will have a long four-on-three as Donovan gets called for a cross-check 10 seconds into a four-on-four; 4:40 remains in regulation.

–And now de Haan goes in for delay of game at 15:48. It’ll remain four-on-three, but that minor won’t begin until Marcinko gets out… or until Binghamton scores.

–The penalties end, but Cannone puts one in the empty net, banked in from the Binghamton zone on just a clearing attempt. 3-0.

Binghamton 3, Bridgeport 0, final. The Sound Tigers are winless in a season-long seven — it’s actually the fifth-longest in team history, if I didn’t miss one — shut out for the first time since the last game before Christmas in Providence.

–That was, for the moment, Bridgeport’s game in hand on Hartford, leaving the Sound Tigers four points back. Syracuse won to move four behind Bridgeport into eighth; Worcester couldn’t come all the way back on Albany so remains at 67, five behind Bridgeport.

–“I thought we controlled the game, five-on-five,” Brent Thompson said. “We even generated chances on the power play where we should have scored. We ran into a hot goalie. We definitely should’ve, deserved a better result than we got.” We thought they limited Binghamton’s chances, despite the power plays that the Senators had. He was happy with Poulin. He more or less saw their power-play goal as a broken play where they caught a break.

John Persson: “He was good on the puck, puck protection. He had a couple of chances in the high slot. It’s obvious he’s been well-coached in junior. … He fit right in right away. He used his body to his advantage.”

The team’s going right on to Springfield. I won’t; college stuff to be done. We’ll keep tabs as best we can.
