A view of the World

Among familiar names on the rosters for the World Championship: Frans Nielsen of Denmark; Jesse Joensuu from Finland (Petteri Nokelainen was reportedly among the last cuts); Swiss goalie Tobias Stephan and forward Nino Niederreiter; and, United despite being from different States, Minnesota’s Kyle Okposo and Connecticut’s Cam Atkinson and Max Pacioretty. Alaska trails its conference […] [Read More]

Pens-Caps

on
One of the side-effect benefits of the conference-based playoffs is that it presented the possibility of a conference final between two archrivals. It didn’t quite work out that way this year, obviously; instead, we got two rivalry matchups in the first round. Bridgeport-Hartford went quickly. Hershey-Penguins? That one sounded like a classic, right on down […] [Read More]

May 9, Game 5 at Bridgeport… (updated)

on
Norfolk, slacker losers of one of their last 32 combined games, somehow managed to eke out tonight’s game in overtime, so the league’s top team advances to face the Connecticut Whale. And if necessary, Game 5, May 9, will be in Bridgeport. (This Saturday would’ve been a different kind of Game 5 in Bridgeport, except […] [Read More]

Thompson gets three games

on
The AHL has given Brent Thompson a suspension of three games for his actions after Game 3. The gamesheet includes a game misconduct to the Bridgeport bench, presumably to Thompson, for the stronger version of verbal abuse of officials. There being nowhere to serve them this spring, Thompson will serve them in October. [Read More]

What time are you skat… oh, yeah

on
Have tried hard to lay low the past few days, but the internal clock has not yet reset: Woke up on time to get to practice two of the past three days. Yeah, um, no availability. There might be some local games remaining, though. On Facebook tonight, Bruce Berlet reported that the Whale may play […] [Read More]

Wrapping up further

on
Weird that it’s over like that. It happens. It does appear that Kevin Poulin’s 50 saves on 54 shots set a team record. Wade Dubielewicz made 45 on 48 shots in Game 6 of the 2006 playoffs. His 22 in the second aren’t a record, though; Dubielewicz made 26 on 27 in the second period […] [Read More]

Wrapping it up (well, almost) (with chat)

on
The Sound Tigers got their wrap-up meetings over in a hurry; well, they got them over in a hurry, as in they got them done today, within 24 hours of the start of the game that eliminated them. They didn’t get them over in a hurry, as in the scheduled 11 a.m. appointments finished up […] [Read More]

Swept clean

on
You could pin this whole thing on Cam Talbot. Man allowed three goals in three games (OK, sure, all in about 37 minutes tonight) while stopping over 40 shots in each of them. You could then again pin this thing on the Whale defense, which, darn it, was my other option on Monday. (Always write […] [Read More]
