Calvin de Haan out for the year

The word just coming through is that Calvin de Haan will miss the rest of the season with a dislocated left shoulder. No immediate report on how they’ll be treating it (though “out for the year” on Oct. 22 doesn’t suggest rest and rehab to me). The left shoulder is the one that got him in January last year, and if I recall correctly from the way they talked about the earlier injury to the right shoulder, I believe the left is the one that had been surgically repaired.

Kevin Schultz of Islanders Point Blank posted video of the play that did it to him. You can pick up de Haan easily about seven seconds in; he’s sprawled out in front of the net (for unclear reason; don’t remember noticing it live, either). He gets up, gets back to the net, defends Beau Bennett’s pass from behind the net, gives Trevor Smith a left-handed shove as Kevin Poulin covers up, then does what we could see from upstairs: beelined to the runway. It’s even clearer from this angle, opposite of ours, that the left arm is hanging. I’d kind of wondered if something had happened before that engagement, but the way he goes into the scrum makes me doubt it.

You kind of shake your head. The way he started last season so strong, then suffered the injuries to both shoulders, and now this.

…..

Optional skate this morning; well-attended. They’ll be back to work tomorrow. We’ll have a chat tomorrow, too, at 1:30. Will set it up tonight on a different post.
