Draft day: Nino to the Wild/picks/Greenwich everywhere

Nino Niederreiter and his agent got their wish: Arthur Staple first reported Niederreiter to the Wild for Cal Clutterbuck and a third-round pick today. Clutterbuck adds grit and some skill to the Big Club (and, as I think Katie Strang first noted, was a teammate of John Tavares’ in junior). Niederreiter obviously has bunches of ability, but things had seemed to fray here. Here’s Mike Russo’s blog post on the deal with more on the Tavares relationship.

We’ll be waiting for the locals to go (Adam Erne of North Branford is the highest in the rankings, but Greenwich has a few possibilities, including USNTDP forward John Hayden). We’ll also be finishing up our Little League story. (Seymour 5, Shelton 2, District 3 final.) The Islanders have No. 15 overall, no No. 2, but now two No. 3s.

–The Rangers’ prospect camp roster, announced today, includes Brock Beukeboom, for one, but also Yale goalie Jeff Malcolm; former Brunswick forward Luke Esposito; and Cheshire’s Luke Curadi, the RPI and former Notre Dame-West Haven defenseman.

–Islanders take another defenseman, Ryan Pulock of Brandon (WHL), at 15. From their press release, Garth Snow: “Ryan’s leadership qualities, his steady defensive presence and his ability to jump into the play on offense will be an asset for our team for years to come.”

–North Branford’s Adam Erne goes 33rd to Tampa Bay.

–Jeff Tambellini’s little brother was around the room a few times when Jeff was here. Adam Tambellini just went to the Rangers at 65. I feel kind of old.

–Isles’ first third-rounder, from the deal today, is Eamon McAdam, a Penn State-bound goalie. His hometown appears to be about halfway between Allentown and Philadelphia.

–And right after, the Blackhawks take John Hayden of Greenwich at No. 74, a pick they acquired from Winnipeg earlier for Michael Frolik. Hayden played a couple of years at Brunswick, then went to Michigan in the National Team Development Program. He’s bound for Yale.

–The Blackhawks posted this on Hayden. Pops back into my head that they’ve got Michael Paliotta of Westport in the fold as well. Meanwhile, the Isles’ second third-rounder is Minnesota-bound Taylor Cammarata.

–Another goalie for the Islanders in the fourth, Stephon Williams, 20, college player.

–The Islanders took a Swedish centerman, Viktor Crus-Rydman (Brian Compton asks the obvious question, at 136. Fourteen picks later, Greenwich’s Wiley Sherman went to the Boston Bruins. He’s 6-6, headed for Harvard eventually.

–Sixth rounder for the Isles is Alan Quine, who at least could play professionally this year if team/player so desire. he’s 20, re-entered after failing to sign with Detroit (3-85 two years ago — had a three-game ATO with Grand Rapids in 2012).

–Brenden Kichton, unsigned by the Islanders, goes to Winnipeg in the seventh round, 190th overall.

–Final Islanders pick (barring something wild — er, crazy) is D Kyle Burroughs. So three forwards, two defensemen and two goalies.

–Correct me if I’ve missed someone, but I think this is the Islanders’ first pick of a re-entry guy since Masi Marjamaki in 2005. (This one always pops out.) They’ve taken a few 20-year-olds (or soon-to-be-20s) over the past 10 years or so, some of whom signed (Campoli, Regier), some of whom signed eventually (DiBenedetto), some of whom didn’t (DeHart), but no re-entries in eight years. For what that’s worth.
