Day, what’s it, 4: Watkins to the Caps

Washington announced the signing of three players today, including one whose deal means Bridgeport needs a 10th captain.

Matt Watkins joins Tyson Strachan and David Leggio (and, should they go to Hershey, Derek Whitmore in the Capitals organization.

“I just had a pretty good situation there, I thought,” Watkins said. “If I end up in the AHL, playing in Hershey is a really good spot in the American League. It was a really enticing deal for myself. I’m pleased to get it done and sign.”

Watkins became captain here on Feb. 22, which was some kind of day*, between Rick DiPietro’s going on waivers, Brett Gallant’s season-ending injury and the gong show in Springfield. He played 23 games with the ‘C’, which is more than four of his eight predecessors.

Possibly more here along the way, unless something deserves a breakout. The Islanders’ kiddie camp begins tomorrow, so perhaps we see a roster today. (My email’s down, too, which is helpful.) Edit, 5:15 p.m.: Here’s that camp roster.

Edit, 2:25: The Islanders announced that Kevin Poulin accepted his qualifying offer.

*-And often is.
