USA wins, Marcinko hurt

The United States’ huge second period broke open a 7-1 win over Slovakia in the men’s opener. The U.S. scored six in the second after Tomas Tatar tied it at 1 on a play that was offside but uncalled; the Americans came right back quickly. Max Pacioretty and Kevin Shattenkirk had an assist apiece. Jonathan Quick made 22 saves.

The fifth American goal, Paul Stastny’s second, was made easier when Tomas Marcinko went down injured in the U.S. zone. He’d been in front of the net, then started to backcheck after Slovakia turned it over, then went down untouched in the slot and couldn’t get up. TV showed him struggling through the door to the bench after the U.S. celebration, only his right leg on the ice, but I never caught anything else about him. He didn’t return.
