Union wins it all

Bridgeport: Birthplace of champions or something. The Union Dutchmen are national champions after Saturday’s 7-4 win over Minnesota in Philadelphia. Darien’s Kevin Sullivan had a late insurance goal and an assist; New Canaan’s Alex Gonye and Fairfield’s Griffyn Martin are also on the roster.

The Dutchmen played three regionals here in the past four years and got to the Frozen Four in two of them, 2012 and this year. And now they’re national champs.

Bridgeport has hosted the East Regional four times, and Union is the second team to win that regional and win the national championship, following Kenny Reiter’s Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in 2011. The team they beat in the first round, before besting Yale in the regional final? Union.

(By the way, Shayne Gostisbehere, who may already be a Philadelphia Flyer, had a goal and two assists tonight and was plus-7.)
