USHL Locals, Phase 2: Tuesday notes

Phase 2 of the USHL Draft included locals Matt Gosiewski of Wilton (45th to Cedar Rapids), Alex Esposito of West Haven (57th to Muskegon), Adam Karashik of Ridgefield (83rd to Lincoln) Joe O’Connor of Hamden (140th to Sioux Falls), Jack Hoey of Fairfield (145 to Tri-City) and Will Brophy of Fairfield (254th to Omaha — the latter two also formerly of Fairfield Prep).

Sioux Falls* took Teemu Pulkkinen ninth today. Not that one.

Victor Crus Rydberg signed with a team in Sweden. (H/T: EliteProspects.) My understanding of the Islanders’ understanding is that, because they drafted him out of Sweden (before he went to play in the OHL), they’ve got four years to sign him (that is, two more after this summer).

At Worlds, Slovakia, Belarus, Switzerland (just 1-0 over Germany) and France were winners today. The big Sweden-Canada showdown in the other pool is Wednesday afternoon our time; the winner will have a hard time not winning that group. Meanwhile, Russian hockey has apparently lost its mind.

And good luck, New York Liberty fans.

*Sioux Falls also was the only one left picking in the last five rounds, like that dude at your Rotisserie auction who’s left his bullpen and his backup catcher open and takes five minutes to fill them while you’re ready to go home**.
**I mean, maybe it’s not exactly like that, but waiting to close the browser window this afternoon, that’s how it felt.
