Almost down to the shore: Friday notes

Six weeks to the season, for crying out loud.

A year after he joined their front office — like a year ago this coming Sunday — Chris Drury became the Rangers’ assistant general manager.

Former Albany Devil Ben Johnson was found guilty of sexual assault in Canada, and the Devils announced quickly that they plan to terminate his contract.

Don’t remember ever getting both tiebreakers in the Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz before.

I had completely forgotten about Letterman, from the old Electric Company, let alone that it included Gene Wilder, Zero Mostel and Joan Rivers, until Ken Jennings dropped this tweet Thursday night. (Forgotten, except when “it’s a word… it’s a plan” would bubble up from my subconscious.)

Speaking of stuff that bubbles up from my subconscious, for whatever reason, crowds singing reminds me of Fred Hellerman of the Weavers, in their famous Carnegie Hall concert, saying “try some harmony!” in the middle of “Goodnight, Irene.” He played with the Chad Mitchell Trio (along with Roger McGuinn) at the Bitter End, which was recorded and became a live album, which is probably up there with the Beatles at Shea among concerts I wish I’d seen. You could go on and on with that career. RIP, the last of the Weavers, bound to reach the Promised Land.
