Waivers New Year: Kearns, Holmstrom on

Today, the 12th day before the regular season, is in the CBA as the start of the “Playing Season Waiver Period,” the first day that players can be placed on waivers to be sent down. The Islanders got started with Bracken Kearns and Ben Holmstrom, two of the Sound Tigers’ key veterans last season.

Edit: Had I waited 10 minutes, I’d have received the announcement that the Islanders have sent the first three down: Loic Leduc, Carter Verhaeghe and Kyle Schempp. They’ve also released AHL-contracted Josh Winquist from his camp tryout.

……

Canada won the World Cup last night, with Brad Marchand’s last-minute short-handed goal capping a late comeback. Tip of cap to the Canadians, but also to Frans Nielsen and Nino Niederreiter (and Scott Boggs and Jim Miccio) and Team Europe, the “and the rest” that pushed Canada to the limit.
