Halak called up: Thursday notes

The inevitable, to borrow a phrase, was bound to happen.

The Islanders called up Jaroslav Halak this morning. Those plugged in up there expect him to start in Pittsburgh, which seems logical, if you’re going to call the guy up.

Back here, the Sound Tigers had an optional after last night’s win in Albany and the trip home. Last night’s healthy scratches plus the Jones brothers, Darren Nowick and Eamon McAdam. Talked to the goalie for the paper.

No word yet on the corresponding move here. Would assume that’s Stephon Williams. McAdam said he wasn’t sure yet how Brent Thompson planned to proceed with the goaltending tandem, and I haven’t had a chance to talk to Thompson yet, either (Matt Carkner, Bernie Cassell and Marc Champagne running things at Wonderland today).

Halak was the Islanders’ third regular recall after the trade deadline (Adam Pelech and Josh Ho-Sang were the first two), so they can make one more before the end of their regular season. Emergency recalls don’t count toward that, but they’re a couple of injuries away at each position, even after, Arthur Staple reports, Ryan Strome broke his wrist last night in the win over the Rangers.

Connor Jones said he felt good last night in his return, crediting Zack Yannes among others for getting him ready to get back in. “It was fun to get back out there,” he said. “To help the team win, I’ll do anything.”

Elsewhere, Hartford got Magnus Hellberg back from the Rangers.
