OptionalBlog: Wednesday notes

Optional/goalies practice today. Mostly the young’ns out there. (Plus Christopher Gibson again, taking shots.) No ins or outs, said Brent Thompson; what’s here is what they’ve got.

So one more full practice tomorrow and a morning skate Friday, then it’s off to a weekend that’ll determine what goes on here Monday. Tonight will offer at least a tiny bit of clarity about what will be possible Friday. Wednesday’s Scoreboard watching (EastWatch ’17): Providence at Springfield; Lehigh Valley at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The Phantoms clinch with a point; the Bruins clinch with a win. And, again, Providence plays Lehigh Valley on Friday and Hershey on Saturday.

Not sure we’ll precisely liveblog tonight, but we’ll have an eye on it all.

Doug Weight is no longer the Islanders’ interim coach.

The playoffs begin one league up tonight. My Stanley Cup champion prediction is San Jose. I’ve picked them every year for like 23 years, so no sense stopping now.

Thanks to Nick Niedert for the reminder about this story on the ECHL from the Wall Street Journal, headlined “Minor-League hockey is getting less violent — and less popular.”

From the NTDP, a profile on Phil Kemp of Greenwich.

And RIP, Dorothy Mengering and John Warren Geils.
