Transactions / Kelly Cup / Register: Monday notes

Quiet day around here (ahem) with softball games threat-of-rained out, but elsewhere…

The Colorado Eagles are the Kelly Cup champions, finishing off a sweep of South Carolina on Tuesday night with a 2-1 win. Defenseman Matt Register* was named MVP of the playoffs after scoring 24 points, two off teammate Alex Belzile’s league lead. So that’s a title (another title) for Darryl Bootland, who had a goal and 30 penalty minutes in 18 (out of 20) playoff games at age 35, and for Kent Simpson, who played in four games. Parker Milner had a 2.30 goals-against average and .919 save percentage for South Carolina, playing all but three minutes in the Stingrays’ playoffs.

The Calder Cup Final(s) resume(s) Wednesday in Syracuse.

Harry Zolnierczyk assisted on the winning goal as Nashville tied up the Stanley Cup Final at 2.

RIP, Jimmy Piersall.

And I try to stay on top of the obits, but they slip by me pretty rapidly these days. Thanks to Howard Teitelbaum’s latest entry in the Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz (No. 364, answers for which just came out to tip me off) for these from earlier this year: RIP, Bobby Freeman, Sonny Geraci, Rosie Hamlin, Sylvia Moy and Peter Sarstedt.

*-I am not kidding.
