Ludlowe Defeats St. Joe’s To Advance To FCIAC Semifinals

Ludlowe baseball defeated St. Joe’s 10-2 in the FCIAC quarterfinals.

Ludlowe got on the board in the top of the first when Victor D’Ascenzo stole home as part of a double steal.

Ludlowe scored another run in third on a D’Ascenzo ground out.

St. Joe’s got on the board in the bottom of the third with a bang as Ryan Moran hit a solo home run to cut the Ludlowe lead to 2-1. The Cadets tied the game in the third on a Jake Amoroso RBI single. After 3, Ludlowe and St. Joe’s were tied at 2.

Ludlowe retook the lead in the 4th. Kevin Hickey had a bases loaded 2 RBI double to left to make it 4-2. That was followed up by a Mike Poudrier 2 RBI single to make it 6-2. The Falcons tacked on another in the inning on a Tommy Howell RBI single to make it 7-2 Ludlowe after four innings.

Hickey delivered again in the 5th with a 2 RBI single to make it 9-2.

Ludlowe tacked on one more in the top of the 7th to go up 10-2.

On the mound, Ludlowe got 5 solid innings from Andrew Salveson and 2 shut out innings from Peter Cross to finish the game.

The Falcons will play next on Wednesday in the FCIAC semifinals at Harbor Yard at 7:30 vs Danbury.

Warde’s Season Ends With Loss To St. Joseph’s

St. Joe’s baseball beat Warde 10-3 on Saturday afternoon on the final day of the regular season.

The loss ends Warde’s season as they fall short of making the state playoffs, finishing with 7 wins.

The win for St. Joe’s clinches them the number 3 seed in the FCIAC playoffs.

St. Joe’s got out to a hot start, putting up 6 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, knocking Warde starting pitcher Reece Maniscalco out after just 2/3 of an inning.

The Cadets got back to back RBi singles from Ryan Moran and Mark Hirschbeck to go up 2-0. Following a hit batter, Ishmael Herrera singled to plate another. The hits just continued for the Cadets as Mike Pulaski singed in another run and 2 batters later Nick Williams singled in another to go up 5-0. St. Joe’s got another run on a sacrifice fly.

The Mustangs were able to get out of the inning on a wild pitch that got away from the catcher but pitcher Justin Triunfo, who had replaced Maniscalco, was able to tag the runner out at the plate trying to score from 3rd.

In the top of the 3rd, Warde loaded the bases with no outs, but were not able to score as the next 3 batters popped out, struck out, and hit into a fielders choice to short.

St. Joe’s tacked on 3 more runs in the 3rd inning. Following a single and an error put runners of 1st and 2nd, Williams tripled to left to bring home 2 more runs and make it 8-0 in favor of St. Joe’s. Two batters later Jon Prutting singled to center that brought in Williams to make it 9-0.

Warde loaded the bases again in the 5th, this time with one out, and once again couldn’t score.

The Cadets scored another in the 5th, after rutting doubled with 2 outs, Ryan Moran drove him in to make it 10-0.

In the top of the 6th, Warde finally got on the board. Ian Duffy’s RBI singled score Nick Nardone to make it 10-1. The next batter, pinch hitter Christian Sabella doubled to bring in Triunfo.

Warde got another run in the top of the 7th on a Peter Detrik RBI single, but fell by a 10-3 score.

St. Joe’s finished the regular season 15-5, 14-4 in the FCIAC. They will host Fairfield Ludlowe in the 1st round of the FCIAC tournament at 4. For Warde, their season comes to an end. The Mustangs have a young team and have a bright future going forward.

Fairfield Prep Rugby Defeats Fairfield In State Semifinals

Fairfield Prep rugby beat Fairfield Rugby Club 27-19 on Friday night in the state semifinals.

The first half was back and forth but Prep was able to pull away in the second half.

Fairfield scored first, getting the try and the conversion kick to go up 7-0.

Prep cut the deficit to 7-3 with 25:30 to play in the half, getting the dropped goal.

With 12:15 to go in the half, Prep would take the lead for the first time, getting both the try and conversion kick to go up 10-7.

Fairfield would retake the lead 14-10 with 9 minutes to go.

Prep would retake the lead 15-14 with 5:28 in the half. At the half, that would be the score.

Prep would take control in the second half, getting a score with 26:45 to play and 14:00 to play to go up 27-14.

Fairfield scored with 12 seconds left to cut it to 27-19 but couldn’t do anything else and Prep would win by that score.

Prep will play the winner of Greenwich v. Staples in the championship, while Fairfield will play the loser in a consolation game.

Quinn’s Second Walk Off Of Week Lifts Ludlowe Over Darien On Senior Day

For the second time in a week, Connor Quinn was the hero. Quinn singled in Andrew Salveson to give Ludlowe a 7-6 dramatic victory to close out the regular season.

The game did not start off well as Darien put up 3 in the top of the 1st. Ludlowe answered with 1 in the bottom of the 1st on a Mike Kochiss RBI double to cut the deficit to 3-1 after an inning.

Darien got 1 in the top of the second but Ludlowe came back with 1 of their own on a Tommy Howell RBI single.

Dairen scored 3 more in the 3rd to go up 6-2. The game stayed that way until the 5th when Ludlowe scored 3 runs to cut the deficit to 6-5.

Ludlowe was down to their final out when Kevin Hickey singled to center. Then Ludlowe tied the game when Salveson singled to right to score pinch runner Ray Condon.

After Mike Poudrier walked, Quinn came to the plate with runners on 1st and 2nd and lined a single to center field to give the Falcons the come from behind victory.

After the game, the 14 seniors were honored on the field along with their parents.

Ludlowe finished the regular season 13-7, 13-5 in the FCIAC. They will play in the 1st round of the FCIAC tournament on Monday at a time and place to be announced.

Ludlowe Clinches FCIAC Playoff Berth With Win Over Harding

Ludlowe baseball cliched a spot in the FCIAC playoffs with a 19-0 win over Harding.

Ludlowe hit the ball well throughout the game and was helped out by some Harding miscues.

Ludlowe got contributions from everyone throughout the lineup and everyone was able to get in to help the Falcons get the win. One standout was Mike Kochiss going 3-3.

On the mound, the Falcons were also very good. Matt Lilly threw 4 innings, followed by Dan Casey for 2 and Max Settineri closed the game out with a perfect 7th.

The Falcons improve to 12-7, 12-5 in the FCIAC. Ludlowe will close out the regular season against Darien tomorrow on Senior Day looking to improve their seeding for both the FCIAC and state playoffs.

Ludlowe’s spot in the FCIAC playoffs will not be known until the regular season is over depending on what happens with the Falcons game tomorrow and other games around the league for the rest of the week.

Rivalry: Ludlowe Lacrosse Dominates Warde

Ludlowe lacrosse beat Warde by a 10-2 score.

Ludlowe got goals from Mac Eder (2), Henry Kreitler (2), Jack Palmer (2), Riley Larson, Ben Hawthorne, Kyle Mason, and Ben Tanguay.

Warde got goals from Mike Adams, and Charlie Edison.

Ludlowe led 3-0 after 1 quarter and 3-1 at halftime.

Ludlowe then domated the 3rd quarter, Outscoring Warde 4-0 in the quarter, to take a 7-1 lead after 3 quarters. The Falcons then tacked on 3 more goals in the final period.

Ludlowe improves to 9-6, 6-5 in the FCIAC. Warde drops to 8-7, 5-6 in the FCIAC.

Quinn’s Heroics Lead Ludlowe Past Danbury

Connor Quinn’s walk off single in the bottom of the 7th gave Ludlowe a huge 2-1 win over Danbury.

Quinn contributed to the first Ludlowe run, with an RBI single in the 2nd inning.

Danbury scored first, getting a run in the top of the 1st. Danbury had runners and 2nd and third with one out. They got the run on a sacrifice fly to right field but Ludlowe was able to get the runner out going from 2nd to 3rd to end the inning.

Patrick Gutierrez pitched 6.2 innings allowing those 2 runs. After getting the first 2 outs in the inning, Danbury got a runner to 2nd base on an error and Gutierrez was pulled in favor of Victor D’Ascezno. D’Ascenzo got out of the inning and ends up picking up the win in relief.

Quinn on the win “We played well today and the birds are flying high and we just have to keep it up”.

Ludlowe improves to 11-7, 11-5 in the FCIAC. The Falcons can clinch an FCIAC playoff berth with a win tomorrow at Harding.

Ludlowe Beats New Canaan in Pivotal Game

Ludlowe baseball beat New Canaan 7-4 on Monday afternoon.

The Falcons got out early and never trailed.

Ludlowe scored 1 run in the top of the 1st on an RBI single by Mike Kochiss.

New Canaan came back to tie the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning.

Ludlowe retook the lead in the top of the 2nd. The Falcons put up 4 runs in the inning. Andrew Salveson had and RBI single, Kochiss had an RBI double and Tommy Howell had a suicide squeeze bunt single to plate a run.

The Rams cut into the lead in the bottom of the inning scoring 3 runs to make it 5-4 in favor of Ludlowe after 2. Alex Curto and Henry Lavieri had RBI singles and Casey Ouellette had an RBI double in the inning.

Ludlowe tacked on in the 3rd when Mikey Arman led off the inning with a solo home run to left field to give Ludlowe a 6-4 lead.

Ludlowe tacked on in the 5th when Salveson drove in his second run of the game with a single.

In addition to his nice day at the plate, Salveson was also very good on the mound. After a rocky 1st 2 innings, Salveson settled down to throw 6 innings, allowing 4 runs, 3 earned to pick up the win.

Victor D’Ascenzo pitched a perfect 7th inning to pick up the save.

The Falcons improve to 10-7, 10-5 in the FCIAC. Ludlowe sits in the 7th spot in the FCIAC. Ludlowe plays next tomorrow in another big game vs Danbury at home at 4:30
