New Canaan YMCA Aquianas Synchronized Swim Team Excels at CT Association Age Group & Intermediate Championship

by:

On April 27-28, 2013 the New Canaan Aquianas Synchronized Swim Team hosted the Connecticut Association Age Group & Intermediate Championship.  At this qualifying meet the top 3 routines for each event are eligible to continue on to the Regional Championship.  The Aquianas qualified 49 routines to move on to the Regional Championship which will also be hosted at the New Canaan YMCA on May 17-19.

”All 49 of our routines qualified on to the next competition,” said Head Coach Jen Muzyk. “That’s a testament to the dedication and hard work of our swimmers and coaches.”

Synchronized swimming is a sport that requires great strength, flexibility, artistry and endurance.  In addition, the swimmer must hold her breath for extended periods of time all the while never touching the bottom of the pool.

The 49 Aquianas routines qualified to move on to regionals are listed below:

The New Canaan YMCA Aquianas Synchronized Swim team, for the second year in a row, scored third in High Point Standings at the U.S. National Synchronized Swimming Championships on April 9-13 in Greensboro, N.C. This is the most important and prestigious synchronized swimming event held in the United States.  Many of the nation’s top synchronized swimmers, including a 2012 Olympian and U.S. national team members, were in attendance.  The championships combine the U.S. Junior Championships (15-18 years of age) and U.S. National Championships (15 and over).  Competing in the Junior events were 115 athletes representing 24 teams from across the United States.

The New Canaan YMCA Aquianas’ own Emma Baranski won first place in both the Solo competition and the Figures competition.  In the Duet event, Baranski and Renee Collett scored 7th.  In the Combo event Baranski, Collett, Emily Roney, Erin Wheeler, Isabella Montgomery, Alexandra Lin, Rebecca Trinklein, Alice Chidley, Eliza Sturgeon, and Camilla Kline earned 6th place.  In the team event 4th went to Baranski, Collett, Roney, Wheeler, Montgomery, Trinklein, Chidley, Sturgeon, and alternate Lin with a score of 146.8870, just behind the top Californian teams.  Santa Clara Aquamaids earned 1st in team with a score of 154.9840, Walnut Creek Aquanuts placed 2nd with 154.4205, and Santa Clara Aquamaids made another team showing in 3rd place with 147.1385.   In total, the New Canaan YMCA Aquianas earned 23 points toward the High Point Standings coming in 3rd.

“This meet is very competitive,” said Head Coach Jen Muzyk, “But, these girls, with their endurance, flexibility, strength and team cohesiveness, met the challenge.”

Now the Aquianas transition to the Age Group part of the competition season.  The next meet, the Connecticut & Metropolitan Association Competition, will be held at home on April 27 and 28 at the New Canaan YMCA.  For more information about synchronized swimming at the New Canaan YMCA, contact Head Coach Jen Muzyk at jmuzyk@newcanaanymca.org.
