On Sunday January 22nd, 5G played the Norwalk PAL 5G, who were undefeated. From the beginning of the game, Norwalk had a big lead, but by the fourth quarter, Norwalk was clinging to a 17-16 lead. Late in the game, a Norwalk player was fouled and made both free throws! The final score was 19-16 Norwalk. Westport PAL 5G did a great job and did not let Norwalk win by too much.

5G travels to Ridgefield to play St. Mary’s-Ridgefield 5G this Saturday, January 28, before hosting Wilton 5G on Sunday.

Westport PAL 7B

The Westport PAL 7B basketball team won two games last week to raise its record to 10-5 (5-1 in division) in the Fairfield County Basketball League’s 7A division. Guided by PAL coaches Vinnie Rissolo and Andrew Strauss, the team returns eight players from the 2010-2011 squad that won FCBL 6B regular season and post-season championships – Kenny Brill, Ben Casparius, Matty Fair, Brendan Massoud, Mack Muller, Sean Pritchett, Fritz Schemel and Justin Seideman – and has been bolstered by talented newcomers Ryan Fitton and Cayne Mandell.

Since practices began in November, the team has been working hard, having fun and coming together.

This past Friday evening, Westport PAL 7B played the Greenwich Flame six days after defeating Greenwich by just two points (34-32). In Friday evening’s return engagement, Westport PAL 7B had its most balanced effort of the season in a resounding 51-37 win. Ahead throughout, the team displayed an aggressive defense led by Ben Casparius, Matty Fair, Justin Seideman and Kenny Brill that forced several turnovers and steals by Seideman, Casparius and Brendan Massoud. Excellent rebounding by Sean Pritchett, Mack Muller and Ryan Fitton helped secure the win. Muller was the game leading scorer, while Cayne Mandell and Fritz Schemel each fired beautiful 3-pointers and Casparius also contributed timely baskets.
The team continued its strong play on Sunday, handily defeating Monroe 51-20, with all players contributing offensively and defensively. Steering the team’s defensive effort were Sean Pritchett, Kenny Brill, Ben Casparius, Justin Seideman and Mack Muller. Ryan Fitton excelled on the boards and in the low post, while Seideman had multiple steals. Providing additional defensive muscle were Brendan Massoud, Cayne Mandell and Fritz Schemel. Balanced scoring among Muller, Fitton and Seideman paced the squad, while Casparius, Brill and Pritchett led the team in assists.
Westport PAL 7B will play FCBL 7A division leader Fairfield Hoops Red 7B this Friday (1/27) at 7 pm at Bedford Middle School, followed by a Sunday afternoon visit to New Milford.
