Pete Rose bet on his own team while he was managing it, had a chance to come clean and didn’t, and got banned for life because of it. His transgressions affected the integrity of the game, and his refusal to apologize or admit guilt kept him from returning to it. There’s no comparison…

Creating confusion and pressure while maintaining discipline on defense will be one of the keys to game today. It’s a tall order.
Technically, a loss by the Giants won’t change their current playoff spot, but it makes the game in Green Bay next week a must win. A win moves the Giants to the #2 seed with a bye and a home game.
The word from the Stadium is the Giants are ready to rock and roll. Let’s hope so!

Huge game today.

Nice article in the NY Times about how the Giants use 3 safeties on 75% of defensive plays and mix and match blitzes and coverages. This seemed to confuse Vick last Eagles game, but turnovers and giving up big plays cost us.

A shot at a deep playoff run hinges on today’s game. Lets hope a rested Jacobs is a difference maker in a frigid meadowlands.

Eli needs to limit his tunrovers and we need to limit the stupid penalties and we win!!!!

I your list of playoff hopefuls I am thinking that you are ignoring the NFC West as they all have losing records.

Time for men to man up!! This team has it all, even with all the injuries. If you are a back up in the NFL you are still one of the chosen few who get to the top…One needs to be ready to Pla’ay the second they put on the uniform. Maybe a rookie won’t be adept at all the nuances that make the offense/defense schemes work but they should be able to BLOCK, TACKLE and CATCH the freakin ball. If Tuck has truly emerged as a leader…well it’s about time someone stepped up to the plate. Washington needs to be skinned on Sunday with a dominance of epic proportions!!! I asked because I wasn’t sure it accomplished anything – my gut says the results were on average exactly what you’d expect kicking right to a dangerous return man. I seem to recall that he took at least one kick-off pretty deep, and he got past the 25 on pretty much every return. We recovered one (I think, or was that a punt?).

I suppose I could look at a game log to see the real numbers…

Eli had no idea where those balls were going. Guys were going out of their way to try to make plays on them, ending up as a tip, and then an INT.
There was a lot of bad in 15 minutes of that game. Given the outcome, I’m going to focus on the 45 minutes of awesome.

Given the number of “deflection INTs/near INTs” this year, I take some minor exception to the idea that Eli was awful to start. Seems like balls go from the fingertips of a receiver to a defender’s arms A LOT lately.

I’m not saying the passes were perfect, but the two INTs are *exactly* the types of passes that are caught without a second thought when things are going well (and that end up as INTs when things are going like.. well, like things were going in the first quarter).

If we intend to make a big mark in the postseason this year, we need stickier hands. We won a Super Bowl on a helmet catch… more heroic receiving (and a little luck) equals wins.

Wow–interesting game.

Giant O-line is playing well.

Giant D-is aggressive and the guys are having fun.

Nicks, Smith and Manningham are a nice group of receivers.

Eli needs to be a touch more accurate, but he was on fire mid game.

Dallas looked easy to figure out as we were getting the match ups we wanted.

Jacobs looked beastly, and could a terror in the second half of the season.

I am so pleased to seen us damage Romo.

The Giants were a violent bunch last night!!!!!

Generally Speaking, and with Joe’s approval, the FUN rating at the Stadium is available for any professional ‘A’ gamer. The ONE idiot all day with the “Sit Down” call once during Pregame(WTF??) and twice during exciting moments of the game was an anomaly. The Pregnant with twins Giant fan that said: “I was at the ‘Catch’ Superbowl….that day will go down as a better day then when I give birth to my twins” trumps the ‘sit down’ idiot in any casino!!!!

Phone service in the Stadium would be nice…..Unless ur a Verizon subscriber you are basically in a black hole. Screens everywhere you go is great yet vendors do have a ways to go to be up to par. Who would think on a warm, sunny afternoon that fans may want a beer…….bottled (albeit plastic) beer would run dry before the end of the 2nd quarter at our closest vendor…yours truly getting the very last!!

I’ll go back, again and again…..it’s our beloved GIANTS… 1.6 BILLION, maybe my seat could be a little roomier but hey…at 6’3″, 300lbs…I was comfortable all game!!

Cow girls Monday night, in their house…..It’s time for the GIANTS to rule the earth..AGAAAAIN!!!!

Great stadium review!. Not that I drink – but if I did, I’d be a little bummed that there was a 5-10 minute wait for a not-so-cold $8.75 Coors Light. My friend Joe told me about this – but at least there were a couple of HD screens to watch the action while waiting in line.
And some real tools with their ‘sit down’ crap. Mid 4th qtr – big 3rd down plays – “NO – YOU STAND UP”!!!

Gotta beat Jacksonville and get to 5-4 in the remainder to have a solid shot at the playoffs.

Here’s hoping we’ve got the momentum to carry us through the next five weeks. Things certainly don’t look as bad as they did when you posted the schedule back on the 13th:
- two games against division rival and not-your-father’s-Dallas Cowboys
- a trip out west to face a Seattle team that gives as many points as it gets
- a bye thrown in there to rest and recuperate
- and oh yeah, Philly in Philly — ugh! That one will be tough (Sikahema boxing the goal post anyone? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sglasPrb9k).

However things shake out in November, last night’s performance by Jacksonville gives hope for a glorious Week 12 at home and a good shot at ending November at 8-4 (gotta be 7-5 in the worst case).

For me the o-line is the issue.

We can not control the line of scrimmage if the O-line is banged up.

Not sure if Bradshaw is an NFL starting running back.

Could be that the roster is poorly assembled and the we are in for a few more years of negativity.

Well put BH and well put by the new Godfather. What bothered Giants fans the most was lack of heart, effort, passion by the defense (arguably the team as a whole). That is what Giant football is built on – hard nose running, timely passing and no holds barred defense. Take that away and we are just the Jets.

For me: the 86′ Super Bowl Celebration: Mecca was filled with snow,temps in the teens and still a huge crowd came to celebrate our first finest hour.

It started in New Haven with a cargo van filled with other fans headed south. Stuck in traffic just inside the state border, we were given two tickets to attend (one of which I still have) the event. Not sure who gave it to us, but it is a priceless part of my collection!

Tiny Tim serenaded the crowd,,, still not sure why… while the Great 22 of 25 Phil Simms, all World Lawrence Taylor and several other Pro Bowlers came to us via video feed from Hawaii.

Snowball fights and a long, long cold ride followed…. I still have vivid memories!

The Gints were pretty average under Tom C. prior to getting Plaxico.

With Plax we win the Superbowl and go 11-1.

He shoots himself and the Gints die a slow painful death.

Yet, the loss of Spags is clearly a component of the teams fatal state of disorder.

Eli seems to have played with pain did very well at times this year.

Thus, there is hope for future iterations of the Gints.

May Giant Stadium rest in peace!.

I thought a sarcastic comment was in order, but it was sucked out of me with that video. My most vivid memory was, of all things, a preseason game. Jets-Giants 1987 sitting about 10 rows from the field at the 40 yard line. First play of the game, Taylor hits the edge at the speed of light. Down goes QB(Ryan/O’Brien?) The speed in which that happened was mind boggling. TV never did him justice. The second memory of that night? When going to get a beer I was told we don’t serve beer at Jets night games. WHAT????WHAT???WHAT???? Why I ask. “Jets fan tried to burn down the stadium last night game”. F-ing jets fans.

I am really happy I took my mental health into consideration and switched over to “Paul Blart, Mall Cop” as soon as the Eagles went up 14-0. For some reason I can’t watch this team. They make me physically sick. Sheridan needs to go back to 2nd Assistant to the Rubbing of the Interior Lineman’s Crotch Coach or whatever his job was previously. He is out of his league obviously. Not sure it’s his fault that Osi, Tuck and Kiawanuka forgot their job descriptions though. Bunch of blow-hard sorority girls. Next week I’ll be renting the latest Greg Kinnear vehicle. Sheridan should have been fired at halftime. I gorilla can call a better defensive game. The next time I see a linebacker 40 yards down field trying to cover a wide-out in one on one coverage….I’m going to implode!!! This isn’t Spagnola’s defensive schemes…right? I think you summed it up correctly in your third paragraph: the D was once again horrific. The New York Football Giants need Eli to produce AND keeps the offense on the field to win games, because when you give the other team the ball, the D tends to give them the lead.

You’d like to get a season split with the dirty Eagles no matter what the case. You’d also like to beat the Eagles and beat Washington and lock up best divisional record. These are both important in playoff tiebreakers. The Vikes need to win their next three to clinch a home playoff game before the end of the season. But you’re right: the Giants need to win at least three out of the last four to have any shot at the playoffs. Who those wins come against is not that important.
But, c’mon – it’s the dirty Eagles!

Actually-the game is important more for winning the Divison, not necessarily a wild card. It would set them up to win the division, all Dallas has to do is lose a game. However, if they lose to the Eagles, then Dallas needs to go 2-2, which I believe is possible, then beating Wash, Carolina and a Vikings team that would mail it in will get the Giants in the playoffs. The season is definitely not over if they lose a close game to the Eagles…now…if they play like crap like they did in Denver…then why bother…

A 11:30am Sunday call places me on the 45 yard line in the lower bowl for this 4:15pm kickoff. The stadium was an FIRE!!!!! Though my chores my have suffered, life is all and well after experiencing the Cowgirl thrashing on a cold day in December on hallowed grounds. Based the analysis of the schedule the Giants clearly have a shot at the division.

We beat Dallas this week and New Orleans and San Diego take care of Dallas and we are in good shape.

All we have to do is show up…..

This past weekend versus the Falcons was the “Hook” game. All long time Giants fans know the “Hook” game. Every troubled season (and those are inummerable) features one Hook game: just when you are ready to call it a season and spend Sunday’s cleaning the yard, enjoying outdoor activities or visiting with family, the G Men come up with a game that keeps us hooked for the remainder of the year.

I was so close to The End Sunday… the Giants perched to toss another game aside, the sidelines populated with highly paid professionals looking as if they can give a rats ass whether their team won or lost in the waining moments of a hard fought battle. I had had it. Pissed off, angry… another lost Sunday.

Then Opie drives his team in an OT offense drive that hooks me back in. I’ll follow along on my computer tomorrow night (damn the NFL Network) and every game until this season ends.

Hakeem Nicks was on the sideline and signed tons of autographs at the half.

He looked clear eyed and relaxed.

Given commentary here two weeks back (commentary with which I wholeheartedly agreed), I had to laugh when Simms asked why the Giants employed so much blitzing. He said something like, “Your defensive line is supposed to be capable of getting some penetration…”

Heartbreaking collapse of the defense at the end. And clock management from the 15 (consecutive run plays to eat minutes) instead of going for the kill shot? We ended up with a FG, a short clock, and SD got a chance to win (a chance which they took to the end zone).

Easy to criticize the decision after the fact, I suppose, but winners play to win…

Our 9th penalty (the Snee hold on 1st & goal at the 3) was the killer – but Gildride, Eli & Co HAVE TO take at least 1 shot at the end zone there. Way too concerned with killing clock, get SD to burn TO’s, etc. But the bottom line is that a 2 possession game with 2:30 left is the closest thing to a lock for Big Blue.
Instead, the D gets roasted at the end. Sheriden appeared to change the defense on the last drive (certainly looked much different than the previous 2 Charger possessions – or should we give Rivers and the SD offense a little credit?) -and Webster quit on the TD toss.
Right now it looks like 5 legit teams in the wild card hunt, including Atlanta, our next opponent. They’re all big games at this point.

Just to recap: Eli should’ve taken a seat, but the first half was not the time to do it. He has a Super Bowl ring, he’s been the starter for nearly five years, he’s earned a little respect. Still, Coughlin could’ve pulled him any number of times in the second half with no loss of face. In any event, the Giants should have moved to a no-huddle at some point to shake things up a bit. Eli does look horrible, and if it is his foot (and I don’t think it is, judging by the scrambles yesterday), he should step aside.

Yes, it finally seemed the tools in the booth were watching the same Giants games the rest of us have been viewing, and it wasn’t pretty.

The confusion, the lack of intensity, the lack of adjustments by the coaching staff – none of the this bodes well for the rest of the season.

Stu, were you surprised the Eagles were wearing purple yesterday at 4?

The Giants played like a bunch of Marys and the worst thing about watching the pitiful performance was that I actually had to agree with what Douche and Douche (Moose and Goose) were saying about my team. It sickened me to do it. The Giants looked like they couldn’t care less and I finally had to ask myself why the hell I was so upset by it if they seemingly weren’t. WTF???Somebody call LT’s “Physical Trainer” from the mid 80′s and have him supply the D-Line with some passion. (wink wink). Ellie, I mean Eli, you flat out stink. Where is the hand strength?

The inexplicable lack of urgency in the third quarter was pathetic. Nobody was hustling, and the only intensity to be seen was Coughlin on the sideline.

I can remember a game at Philly just a few years ago (2005? 2006? 2007?) when the G-men came back big-time in the 4th quarter. It could have been done: this team has done it in the past!

The malaise was so obvious that even Darryl Johnston commented on it, and he’s a major tool…

Either Eli has swine flu, a hand injury or he just sucks. Yesterday’s performance was deplorable…. and why no Carr late in the first half? I’m not suggesting Eli is “done”, but he needs to work on his lack of accuracy and dead duck passes. To be fair, several dropped passes added to missed opportunities, but who is the leader of this team? I see no emotion, no passion, no desire.

OK, I’ve been quiet since this blog began as I am part of the Big Blue Road Crew that attended the N.O. weekend. Yes, it was excellent no matter what happened on the field. But then again, I bleed purple. Minnesota Purple. Thus, given this venue, I won’t embark upon my usual Vikes rant. But I will mention that Sunday promises to be a day of great football! Both the Giants and Vikings play on the Big Screen in our area. Separately for a change. So, as my oven heats and my crock pots bubble in preparation for a full day of great sport, I wish the Giants a swift beating of those dirty birds. My Vikes take Lambeau by storm….a storm led by Brett…my new found QB of Destiny!! SKOL!!

After googling some sort of ‘faceguarding nfl rules’ combo, I came up with the following info (Phil and I go way back!):

Face Guarding Rules in the News

The discussion of NFL rules on face guarding came into the forefront during the AFC Championship game in January 2007. During a play in that game, New England Patriot’s corner back Ellis Hobbs was called for pass interference, which was incorrectly identified by CBS Sports commentator Phil Simms as face guarding. Fans that were aware that there were no rules against this defensive technique were outraged at the call. Later on, the NFL clarified that face guarding was not illegal and admitted that a bad call was made on Hobbs during that game.

Changes to NFL Rules on Face Guarding

It is unclear exactly when the National Football League changed their rules regarding face-guarding, despite extensive research. According to a January 2007 column from Jaguars editor Vic Ketchman, the change was made “six or seven years ago”–which means the rule was most likely stricken prior to either the 2000 or 2001 National Football League seasons.

Nicks needs to move up and replace Manningham in the rotation.

You can’t drop that ball.

I thought that Jacobs went to wide on the 3rd and goal.

He had a seam between the center and guard and he could have bulled forward if he chose to use it.

This game reminded me of Giant teams from the past.

Can you say, Fassel?? Seems like a portion of the team is reverting back to the ‘same old Giants’. We need a leader to step up and STOMP out this defeat-us attitude…..Eli went from pin point accuracy to off by of few steps, when he is on the receivers drop the ball, the defense allowing up the gut runs on big downs….WHAT??? How do the Giants disrupt Kurt Warner’s timing and keep the Cardinals off the field??

If Warner is hot, can the Giants open things up and trade scores with the Red Birds?

I think the Giants need to be a lot more creative on the defensive end mix more line stunts and blitz packages in to keep the Card line guessing.

In addition, Eli has to make plays in the passing game. He missed a few targets early in the game against NO and before you new it were down two scores.

I would like to see a few more 4 wide receiver sets to get Nicks on the field a little more.

Pressure up the middle on Warner combined with some long drives should go a long way to a V.

Next Sunday also marks yet another return of Warner to the Meadowlands. I think Coughlin has seen him play before.

Warner has been sacked 10 times in 5 games this season (Brees only 4). He has targets, though Boldin is reported to have a high ankle sprain after this weekend. I think Arizona has around 250 yards total on the ground so far this season, so (to your point) it’s probably safe for Bill to put a few extra guys up on the line for the odd play here or there.

It was a humbling loss, but starting today it’s only a “1″ in the loss column. Like a Persian rug maker, I’ll accept that only the Supreme Being and the ’72 Dolphins are capable of perfection and resolve to look only forward…

Big Game in the Big Easy, and unfortunately Im on the sidelines for this, the annual Boys Trip to The Game. But I’m there in spirit and let me tell you, I’ll be glued to the 42″ hi def (and hoping to catch the entire game this week, screw you CBS affiliates!

I’m curious to see which Shockey shows up. I havent followed the galute since he stubbed his toe and missed the Giants SB run. I cant believe the rube has matured enough not to be carrying some wicked revenge in his gut. This potentially works three ways for the former SHOCKEY!: 1). He uses his passion and emotion to perform like a SHOCKEY! and help motivate his team to a W. 2). He reacts like the moron he is and gets a taunting call early in the game that costs his team either key field position and/or momentum. 3). He is silenced by a dominate Giants defense and we hear his number called 3, 4 times at best for little or no gain.

Enjoy the game Boys. Duck the gunfire and remember how humbled this crowd was on our last visit! Oh, and I highly recommend the cabbie with hi def video “play by play” for your ride back into Bourbon Street madness!

Exactly. Shockey’s performance in that 2002 postseason game was the beginning of the end for Fassel.

Once Eli no longer had Tiki and Shockey yapping at him in the huddle, his stats went up.

Schockey dropped a TD in the endzone during the playoffs against the 49ers when he was still healthy. He catches the play the Giants establish an in surmountable lead.

After, the drop the 49ers stormed back and we lose the game on a botched filed goal.

He was a great talent, but never a leader.

Eli’s emergence clearly correlates with Schockey get injured and then leaving the team.

The Saints “O” did not dominate the Jets “D”.

The Jets moved the ball well against the Saints early and would have taken the lead 7-0, Sanchez made a bad play that turned into 7-0 for the Saints. Sanchez gave the Saints another score when he held the ball to long and fumbled in the endzone.

I think it will be a close game, but I have not seen anything from the Saints that makes me think that they are a dominant team.

Seems like it varies from team to team, looking at this (which is not very helpful) and this (which is not very specific, but it seems like the Giants at least used to have a rule about the injured players). All I know is once he was hurt, Shockey was invisible until he popped up at the Super Bowl in a luxury box, not the press box as that article says, working on a BH/1#V sized cocktail with a couple of lady friends. Just read the ‘whining’ Shockey article. Very selfish player – wouldn’t have pulled most of the crap he did in NY if he really cared about ‘team first’.
Not totally sure, but I believe that most of what he was denied of when it came to Super Bowl travel, accommodations and access to team and sidelines is mandated by the league. Any thoughts on that, BH?

Disciplined is the key word. Nawlin’s aint seen the like of a Coughlin coached defensive unit this season. The 5’10″ Brees will see even less of downfield with his head in his a$$! The Battle of New Orleans will be the GAME of the season. Said it in Week 2, this wont be the last meeting of these two teams. The outcome of the first wont mean nearly as much as the outcome of the second.

I understand why the League is changing the rules – more streamlined game, fewer injuries. But to take the hitting and intimidation out of the game also makes it less fun. There’s a reason why NFL stands for No Fun League…

Fred B., Cliff Branch and Dave Casper: I am glad we are not facing these guys tomorrow.

I kind of prefer the spirit of the old NFL depicted in these clips.

A world where head shots were the norm and Tebow would have come back in the game!!
