“Spartacus: War Of The Damned” Says a Proper Farewell To Comic Con

by:

Liam McIntyre, Manu Bennett and Steven S. DeKnight presented the official trailer for the STARZ Original Series “Spartacus: War of the Damned” today in San Diego at the show’s final Comic-Con appearance. The crowd’s applause at an exclusive first look from the upcoming season was only matched by that of the surprise appearance by “Spartacus: Vengeance” stars Lucy Lawless, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Peter Mensah, Craig Parker, Viva Bianca, Nick Tarabay and Katrina Law. “Spartacus: War of the Damned” premieres January 2013.

Moderated by reporter Jenna Busch, the evening’s panel saw an incredible fan welcome for the current and past “Spartacus” stars with questions regarding the highly anticipated upcoming season as well as burning questions of this past season’s finale.

“I find it really inspiring watching “Spartacus” because it instantly makes me want to do sit-ups,” said one excited fan, leading Manu Bennett (Crixus) to perform several sit-ups on stage. Bennett then demonstrated the Haka, a traditional Maori war dance, which he performs on set to honor the deaths of fallen Spartacus characters. Another high point of the panel was when Andy Whitfield was touchingly remembered by an extended standing ovation.

“Spartacus: War of the Damned,” currently in production in New Zealand, takes place following the defeat of Roman commander Gaius Claudius Glaber. Spartacus and his men have amassed major victories against the Romans after the Battle of Vesuvius. These victories have not only forged the legend of Spartacus, but have greatly increased the ranks of the rebellion slaves to more than 30,000. Rome is indeed beginning to tremble at the threat Spartacus now represents.

The “Spartacus” franchise began its run Friday, January 22, 2010 with “Blood and Sand.” It was followed a year later with the prequel, “Gods of the Arena” (January 21, 2011).  “Vengeance” hit the air on January 27, 2012 and “War of the Damned” is scheduled to air January 2013.

“Spartacus: War of the Damned” sees the return on Liam McIntyre (Spartacus), Manu Bennett (Crixus), Dustin Clare (Gannicus), Dan Feuerriegel (Agron), Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Naevia) and Ellen Hollman (Saxa). This year, Todd Lasance joins the cast as Gaius Julius Caesar, along with Simon Merrells, who will be playing Marcus Crassus and Anna Hutchison as Laeta.

Filmmaker Cody Blue Snider Fundraises For New Short Film

by:

Long Island Filmmaker Cody Blue Snider released a short film called, ‘All That Remains,’ on Vimeo about three months ago. Since then the film has been seen by thousands. However, the film began long before its online release touring the festival circuit back in 2011 and was continually recognized by various festivals winning multiple awards.

The movie is about a WW2 Veteran dealing with the effects of dymentia. The film goes back and forth through the main characters memories of his time during the war and his current life in a nursing home. The only friend he has is death, but comes to learn that death can’t be trusted.

Check out a clip of the film below — the full version can be viewed here:

Now Snider is working on a new film called, ‘Fools Day,’ and is in need of your help to make it happen. Snider was able to get most of the funding and even has actors donating their time to be in his film. He is half way through fundraising and is desperatley trying to make his dream come true. The movie is a twisted take on a joke a bunch of students play on their teacher that ends up killing her. Snider is going to begin production shortly and found he is over budget. Snider setup an account on Kickstarter trying to raise the $8,000 he needs to begin working on the film. Since setting up the site, he has been able to raise over $4,000. However, he is still short.

To learn more about this amazing short film and to donate (depending on the amount of the donation, you might even see yourself credited in the film) visit the official donation page: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1950451690/fools-day?ref=email

SyFy Announces New Casting Updates for Defiance Drama

by:

Syfy has announced additional casting for its upcoming epic science fiction drama Defiance , inking Julie Benz,Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran and Jaime Murray to co-star in the first-ever series to unite television and MMO gaming.  The pilot, slated to commence production this April in Toronto, is directed by Scott Stewart (Legion, Priest), and written/executive produced by Rockne O’Bannon (Farscape), Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives, Caprica; Hellcats) & Michael Taylor (Battlestar Galactica).  Kevin Murphy serves as showrunner.

Defiance is a visionary enterprise in collaboration with Trion Worlds, with the Syfy series and Trion’s multi-platform shooter MMO poised to debut simultaneously.   Set in the near future, Defiance introduces a completely transformed planet Earth, inhabited by the survivors of a universal war.  Forced to co-habitate, the disparate group struggles to build a new society among the devastation. The dramatic tapestry of the series and the intense action of the game will exist in a single universe where their respective narratives will inform one another and evolve together into one overall story. Defiance is produced by Universal Cable Productions.

Benz portrays Amanda Rosewater, the idealistic mayor of a bustling mining boomtown, one of the world’s few oases of civility and inclusion.  As the newly appointed mayor, she is determined to maintain peace in the community, an ambitious task in this deadly new world.

Leonidas plays Irisa, an exotically beautiful warrior who is part of an alien race called the Irathients.  After Nolan (Bowler) killed her criminal father, he adopted the girl and raised her as his clever – and lethal – right-hand.

Curran will portray Datak Tarr, part of an elite alien race known as the Castithans. Datak grew up in the slums of his home planet, but despite being part of the under-privileged class, he schemed his way onto one of the alien arks, saving himself before his home planet was destroyed.

Murray potrays Datak’s beautiful and proper wife, Stahma, a high-ranking Castithan before her home planet ceased to exist.  Clever, imaginative and darkly opportunistic, Stahma is perhaps more dangerous than her husband.

The four join New Zealand born actor Grant Bowler, who is well-known for the recurring role on Ugly Betty (2008) as Wilhelmina Slater’s love interest, Connor Owens, and for the role of Cooter, the leader of the werewolf biker gang in the HBO series True Blood (2010) and Captain Gault in ABC’s Lost (2008). Bowler plays Nolan, the new law keeper in the boomtown and former Marine who fought in the alien conflict.  After losing his wife and child in the war, he becomes a wanderer in the dangerous new world, eventually joined by Irisa, a young Irathient he raises as his own and as his lone companion in the lawless badlands.

The versatile and dynamic Benz is known for her wide variety of film and television roles, in 2006 winning a Golden Satellite Award for Best Supporting TV Actress for her role as beloved ‘Rita Bennett’ on Showtime’s award-winning series Dexter.  Last fall, Benz recurred on the CBS medical drama A Gifted Man, opposite Patrick Wilson and last spring starred in the ABC series No Ordinary Family, opposite Michael Chiklis. In 2010, she starred on ABC’s smash hitDesperate Housewives for a multi-episode arc as “Robin,” a stripper with a heart of gold and a master’s degree in education.  Throughout her career, Benz has won the hearts of many devoted fans starring in an array of genre classics including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Roswell, as well as the Steven Spielberg-produced miniseries for Syfy (then SCI FI Channel), Taken. In addition, she has guest starred on many hit TV shows, among them Royal Pains,Supernatural, CSI and Law and Order.  On the big screen, Benz starred in the Roadside Attractions film Answers to Nothing, opposite Dane Cook, which was released in December 2011.  Benz also had a great turn with Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets and starred with Rose McGowan, Pam Grier, Judy Greer and Rebecca Gayheart in Jawbreaker, the first of many cult-hits that would soon follow.

British actress Leonidas is known for her many television appearances, most recently in Whitechapel, Eternal Law, and the BBC’s Dracula, as well as the award winning ITV film for television Wall of Silence. Stephanie made her film debut in Sally Potter’s Yes, followed by Ate de Jongh’s Fogbound. Other film credits include the lead role of Helena in David McKean’s Mirrormask, Luis Llosa’s feature film Feast of the Goat, Ben Sombogaart’s Crusade in Jeans: A March through Time, Luna and most recently Andrew Douglas’ U Want Me To Kill Him. Stephanie has also appeared on stage in the lead role of Dani in Marianne Elliott’s The Sugar Syndrome at the Royal Court, receiving rave reviews, and most recently portrayed Adela in Gadi Roll’s House of Bernarda Alba. She is repped by Thruline and ARG in the UK.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Curran rose to fame in the BBC series This Life.  Since then, the actor has appeared in a number of major film and television roles including The Invisible Man, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Guillermo de Toro’s Blade II.   Curran is a graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Murray is an English-born actress best known for playing Stacie Monroe in the BBC series Hustle and Lila Tournay in season two of the Showtime series,Dexter. She has also had recurring roles as H.G. Wells in Syfy’s Warehouse 13, Gaia in the Starz series Spartacus: Gods in the Arena and Olivia Charles in The CW series Ringer.

Tribeca Film Festival Announces Films for Spotlight

by:

The Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), presented by American Express, today announced its feature film selections in the Spotlight and Cinemania sections, as well as Special Screenings and the Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival lineup. The 11th edition of the Festival will take place from April 18 to April 29 in New York City.

The Spotlight section screens 34 films, 22 narratives and 12 documentaries that demonstrate the breadth of films at the Tribeca Film Festival. Nineteen films in the selection will have their world premieres at the Festival. The Cinemania section offers a largely international assortment of seven thrilling narrative films.

“The Spotlight program is a wonderful encapsulation of the originality and diversity of filmmaking that Tribeca seeks to highlight. We have films from emerging filmmakers as well as seasoned veterans, narratives that showcase stellar performances and insightful writing, and documentaries that challenge and inform their audiences,” said Frédéric Boyer, newly appointed Artistic Director of the Tribeca Film Festival. “With Cinemania, our selections demonstrate the imagination and resourcefulness of filmmakers from around the world who push the boundaries of genre in order to entertain, thrill, and engage.”

“It was important that we head into Tribeca’s second decade highlighting projects that were attuned to the pulse of our cultural climate,” said Director of Programming Genna Terranova. “That said, both consciousness and levity play a prominent role in this year’s selection. We are also eager to introduce audiences to a group of films that are reworking genres and testing traditional modes of storytelling.”

The sixth annual Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival, founded to broaden the audience for independent film through stories about sports and competition, will open with the world premiere of Benji, directed by the duo Coodie and Chike. The documentary looks back at the story of a teenage basketball phenom in 1980s Chicago whose ascension to the upper echelon of the sport tragically ended when he was senselessly murdered.

“This year’s Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival films explore athletes’ diverse challenges on and off the playing fields,” said Terranova. “I’m excited we can share these inspiring stories—from runners training for the Olympics in rural Africa to Tim Wakefield’s ever-elusive and now historic knuckleball—with both our sports and documentary fans alike.”

The complete list of films selected for Spotlight, Cinemania, and Special Screenings follow, as well as the titles in the Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival:

SPOTLIGHT

Co-Sponsored by Cadillac and JetBlue
Stimulating romance, biting satire, and provocative documentary depictions of sports, music, and cinema are just a part of Tribeca’s entertaining and thought-provoking Spotlight section. With 15 returning filmmakers and nine debut features, the stories range from the familiar to the exotic, showcasing a range of noteworthy performances and fascinating portraits alike. From the narrative world, a trio of films examine protagonists at very different, yet equally pivotal moments in their lives: an aspiring teen journalist in Struck By Lightning, written by Glee’s Chris Colfer; a suddenly-single New Yorker in Daryl Wein’s sweet and authentic Lola Versus; and Felicity Jones as a turn-of-the-century English bride-to-be in the charming Cheerful Weather for the Wedding. Documentary heavyweights Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) and Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg (Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, TFF 2010) return to Tribeca with crowd-pleasing new pieces: Spurlock’s Mansome humorously probes the phenomenon of male grooming, and Stern and Sundberg’s Knuckleball! is a dynamic deconstruction of baseball’s most difficult pitch. Nonfiction works across the section excel this year, from Let Fury Have the Hour, an energetic collage of artists and social thinkers elaborating on the theme of “creative response,” to Ramona Diaz’s Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey, a touching and inspirational profile of Journey’s new lead singer and his unlikely discovery on YouTube, to Petter Ringbom’s fascinating look at John Forté’s inspiring concert tour across Russia in The Russian Winter. This year’s 34 Spotlight films are sure to entertain, inspire, and spark debate.
