The Mayor’s Myopia

by:

Mayor Bill Finch reinforces his hopeless case of Mad Myopia in Connecticut Post reporter Linda Conner Lambeck’s feature about the University of Bridgeport’s comeback.

Without doing his homework, without visiting the campus, without the rationale to examine the university’s economic impact on the city, the local kids it educates, the jobs it creates, its impact on one of the finest waterfront parks in the country Seaside Park and vice versa, Finch likens the place to a criminal enterprise funded by that dastardly cult icon the Unification Church.

Well, some folks including a number of FBI agents in the state believe  that dastardly Democratic Town Committee to which Finch is beholden and relies on to fund and turn out the vote for his political allies and his own campaign is a criminal enterprise. Does that make Finch corrupt?

Because the Unification Church gave UB a financial bailout in 1992 to keep it afloat the place should be boarded up?

Tongue getting ahead of brain has always been Finch’s Achilles, and perhaps Chief of Staff Adam Wood should designate someone to stick a rag in the mayor’s mouth every time UB is mentioned.

UB is a fantastic university with good people running it. Let’s look at some of the folks that work there: Mary-Jane Foster, founder of the Bridgeport Bluefish and one of the most respected professionals in the city, George Estrada, who did an admirable job when he served as the city’s director of Public Facilities, Sue Katz, one of the brightest media minds I know who is a professor of communications.

Now I’ve got to wonder since the mayor has  broad stroked all those accomplished folks as being funded by a criminal organization, is he going to return (or reject) past and current donations for his reelection campaign from folks that work at UB?

And what about the 90-member Democratic Town Committee? Tit for tat.

As a non-member of the Unification Church (also known as the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification) it did not take a great deal of research to learn that this church is not a cult. Frederick Sontag, a professor of philosophy, concluded that “one thing is sure: the church has a genuine spiritual basis” after an 11-month study of the worldwide Unification Church. A German court made a similar finding.

As a member of the University of Bridgeport faculty, I have met a number of members of the Unification Church. They are intelligent, kind-hearted, and industrious human beings who have chosen to worship within the Unification Church. They are similar to my forefathers that left Europe due to religious persecution in that they are enjoying their rights as Americans to religious freedom.

I do hope the Mayor of Bridgeport will come to appreciate the University of Bridgeport and all it offers to the residents of the Park City.

Thank you for bringing this comparison to light! DTC is to Organized Crime what UB is to moonies…..
What a dumb man this mayor is. If only we had Caruso, if only….
    (giant sigh)

  4. Brickbat says:

Oh, OK, the Moonies aren’t a “criminal enterprise”. They’re just a cult. Feel better now?

  5. Vigilante says:

Hey Lennie, Finch’s problem that he needs a brain first. Aside from that old adage that one should engage one’s brain first before engaging the mouth. Finch is a liar. He never indicated that he had returned the money he made as a state senator while double dipping as the mayor early on in his one term mayoralty.
Finch has no clue, neither do the flies who he’s hired to run the city (i.e. Andy Nunn, Charlie Carroll, Carol Curry,
etc., etc. etc.). This city needs a businessman who understands that theirs is fiscal responsibility in all of the economic decisions that are made.
As I said in another blog, UB should have been taken over by UConn and made the downstate campus. It would have been a turn-key operation with no downside for Connecticut. It would have saved the law school and the post-graduate studies from running screaming into the night. The law school became Quinipiac.
Sun Myung Moon went to Danbury as a tax cheat. What does that tell you? The University of Bridgeport should have done for Bridgeport what Yale has done for New Haven (perhaps on a smaller scale).

  6. jeff says:

He is a snake….Used smoke and mirrors to win a VERY close election over Chris Caruso. Like the 600 dollar tax refund he promised…then turned to raise taxes after he won….He knew he couldn’t give a refund to the people of Bridgeport….He lied then and will continue to lie through out his political career…At least with Caruso the people would be told the truth from the beginning….Hope the people of Bridgeport wake up and smell the cup of stale “Fink/Finch” coffee and vote him out of office…..Finch>>>>LIAR LIAR HOPE YOUR PANTS FEEL LIKE THERE ON FIRE…lol

What’s the over/under on the Mayor’s public apology to UB?
Mayor Bill(for an elected official) sure demonstrates alot of anger to all of the people of the City of Bridgeport & UB.
I challenge Mayor Finch to support his position or retract the negative comments that he has made.

-UB put’s alot of bread on alot of tables around here.

  8. The Bridgeport Kid (accept no substitutes!) says:

Stick a rag in the mayor’s mouth? How’bout a dirty sock. That oughta teach him, eh? And yes, Finch’s involvement with the Bridgeport Democratic Town Committee does indeed make him corrupt. If the Federal Bureau of Investigation regards the DTC as a criminal organization, well . . . If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck . . .

  9. Grin Ripper says:

Forget about UB, did finch ever return all of the campaign donations that he got from Sal Dinardo like he promised he was going to?
Did finch ever donate all of the money that he was paid to the Beardsley Zoo when he was double dipping as mayor and state senator?
Or how about the donations to his website that he shook people down for back when he was senator?
Or how about the way he siphoned campaign money to a bogus company
Forget UB, Finch is a criminal enterprise.

  10. Joel Gonzalez says:

Lennie, I was wondering why you had not posted Finch’s remarks on OIB.
During the 5 years I served with Finch on the City Council, there were many times that I had to hear: “The Moonies are brain-washing their students.” While all along, Ganim had been brain-washing at least 16 — Finch being one of them — out of the 20 Council members.
I was shock to read what the mayor said.

  11. Tom Kelly says:

Bill should know better not to bite the hand that feeds him! He’s starring in a new movie to called; “Cult Fiction!”
