That prehistoric noise you just heard came from Republican political operatives throughout Connecticut and Washington DC who wanted Chris Dodd’s poll numbers to be bad but not so bad that he’s now decided to retire from the United States Senate.
So, now, whether Linda McMahon or former Congressman Rob Simmons, Republicans are stuck with Attorney General Dick Blumenthal, Connecticut’s Mr. Wonderful, as the opponent. Talk about a stick in the eye for the GOP. This is one giant turd in the punchbowl of the GOP party.
McMahon plans to spend forty or fifty million of her own dough on this race. A nice investment against Dodd. But against Blumenthal? Hey, Linda, Bridgeport will be happy to take that fifty million dollars for a new Congress Street Bridge!
Over the next few days you’ll be hearing McMahaon, Simmons and their designated operatives say pretty much the same thing: no matter the Democratic candidate, he’ll buy right into the train crash of reckless spending in Washington. Meanwhile, they’ll try to find Bloomer’s weak spot. No one’s been able to find one yet. The people’s attorney/consumer advocate has never been thoroughly scrutinized. You’ll be hearing things about Blumenthal, real or imagined, you’ve never heard before. Barring something kooky the GOP cannot beat Dick straight up.
Get ready for some smash mouth campaigning.

@Jonathan: Virtually any sensible health reform legislation should allow costs to go down, not up. With almost everyone covered, and paying into the system through taxes, how on earth do they come up with a plan that RAISES costs for everyone. But they did.
I’m already paying for lazy people who don’t pay, and I’m by no means rich. Lets hear about the uninsured being made to pay their own way. But we never hear that.
Obama did inherit an economy on its way down- and he proceeded to do the exact wrong thing, spending hundreds of billions on liberal agenda items instead of actual stimulus. At $200,000 per job created, that recovery effort is a total failure. He also needed to get the housing market revived, but has totally failed there too. 31,000 mortgages have been modified. That’s a ridiculously small number.
Not to mention, only about 9% of the stimulous money has actually been spent- but what’s the hurry? Who cares if millions of people are out of work, right? Obama has ignored the 2 most important needs America has right now, and is instead spending $ 2 for every dollar the gov’t takes in. The national debt under Obama will rise by a factor of 4, so he’s not responsible for Bush’s deficit, but rather one that is 4 times bigger. Only a far left democrat could be ok with that.
Don’t worry though, we will be getting rid of your ilk in the next election.
Last among people willing to grasp this are some reporters, who try to frame the issues by ragging on republicans who aren’t even in power. When faced with a consistently dishonest politician like Dodd, talk about country club republican with turds in their punchbowls- how edifying.
Hey Jonny, Obama’s Wall Street connections do give one pause… it’s both sides of the aisle. Obama’s got no depth of experience in economic matters, nor military ones as exhibited by the recent fiasco in Detroit. Look at who Obama’s got for advisors and you’ll see the measure of the man…Rom Emanuel, Janet Napolitano, and their ilk. Admittedly Bush was manipulated cowboy (sic Dick Chaney…note that when Chaney drank water Bush didn’t speak).
And Dodd? A huge part of the problem who overstayed his welcome.
And Blumenthal…I’d love to see if the GOP can find any dirt on this boy scout.

Lennie, you are sounding like a “Dickhead”. “…they’ll try to find Bloomer’s weak spot.” Perhaps, the Republicans should look at Bloomer’s G-spot. They may find something to “Spitzer” in every Dickhead’s eyes.
It’s official: Janathan Kantrowitz is the leader of the “Dickheads” movement. Before you get all upset Jonathan, just like the followers of the Greatful Dead are known as “Deadheads”, Yesterday, I officially declared the followers of Dick Blumenthal as “Dickheads” on Lennie’s webzine.
On point one (1) above, I must school you on the fact that everyone who currently pays for health insurance coverage are charged $1,000 to $1,200 extra by the Insurance Companies to cover the uninsured ones. Now that everyone is supposedly going to be covered by your “Boyama’s” plan. Why is it that we are going to still be charged the extra money to cover the uninsured if everyone is going to be insured? Where do you think that money will end up? Worth it? To who?
On point two (2), the economy is one of the key factors in Dodd’s down-fall. He (Dodd) is a U.S. Senator who is clearly being held accountable by voters. Obama was a U.S. Senator too during the time that this econonomic meltdown was taking shape. How can you dare to write that he inherited a terrible economy and say he’s not responsible.

1.Many working class people have no health insurance – we may all pay a little more for the greater good of covering so many without any insurance – but it’s worth it.
2. Obama inherited a terrible economy on its way down – he’s not responsible for the unemployment or the deficit – and while the stimulus package has slowed the descent, it wasn’t large enough – thanks to “moderates” in his own party – to completely halt it.
Lack of oversight by the previous administration you bet. Google Franklin Raines, Jamie Gorlick and lookup who in Congress was supposed to be watching these folk. Does Barney Franks ring a bell. Throw in Ram Omanuel (sic) who got a 400k bonus working Freddie Mac. Why is there no investigation into any of this. The Dems are two busy trying to control Fox News to do anything.Find out about the community investment act which does Fannie and Freddie.The books were cooked. How does our Sec of State deal with receiving millions of dollars from the Arabs for Willy’s library? Where’s the oversight of Charlie Wrangle? Why can’t Michelle Obama practice law in Illonois?
@Jonathan: health care costs to middle class families are going to go UP under the proposed plan. There is no tort reform in the plan. Is it too much to ask for, better legislation?
Jobs? The unemployment rate is still rising, and it’s at historic highs.
Reform the financial institutions? Obama’s cabinet is lined with wall street people who have an interest in the outcome. Not to mention they are tax cheats.
Complete meltdown by the former administration? Obama has increase the deficit by a factor of 4, over what it was after 8 YEARS of Bush.

Jay, my point is Republicans would much rather run against Dodd than Bloomer. Wouldn’t you? I’m not discounting Linda McMahon’s candidacy, or even Simmons. Running against Bloomer is a tough task. But you never know…I’ve seen strange things happen on the way to the election.
The working people of Connecticut know that the Democrats in Washington are working to make health care more available and more affordable, overcome the recession and loss of jobs caused by the previous Republican administration, and reform our financial institutions so that we never again come to the brink of a complete meltdown as we did under the lack of oversight of the previous administration.
