Only in Bridgeport

Award-winning journalist Lennie Grimaldi cracks open the juicy stuff in Connecticut's largest city

Didn’t Family Guy Know Bridgeport Is Camelot?

by:

I prefer this quote about Bridgeport:

So I gave up the idea of a circus, and concluded he was from an asylum. But we never came to an asylum—so I was up a stump, as you may say.

I asked him how far we were from Hartford. He said he had never heard of the place; which I took to be a lie, but allowed it to go at that. At the end of an hour we saw a far-away town sleeping in a valley by a winding river; and beyond it on a hill, a vast gray fortress, with towers and turrets, the first I had ever seen out of a picture.

“Bridgeport?” said I, pointing.

“Camelot,” said he.

—Mark Twain, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, 1889.

What are the smoke stacks used for and what companies utilize them? Whats the benefit of them? Maybe there are hydro-electric plants.

Bridgeport may have been a beautiful city a hundred years ago but now it’s one of the poorest in the country surrounded by some of the richest in the country. It’s really one of the many disgraces of CT. Get those fairfield county fatcats and bigwigs who make all their money off Chinese and Mexican labor to pull their weight and you won’t see you’re hell hole being made fun of….and maybe you’ll even see the picture Twain drew.

    Camelot ? More like “CRIME-A-LOT”……(starting with elected so-called leaders)….

It would be nice to have those smokestacks humming with thousands of jobs provided. The worst part about all this is that the national black eye comes at the expense of a good-hearted community abused by segregationist policies that put a zoning fence around Bridgeport. Then people from those suburban communities point an accusatory finger at the city in blogs. Us Bridgeporters have ourselves to blame for not demanding that the suburbs pull their load by also providing homeless shelters,or educating children from dysfunctional families. Wake up Bridgeporters!

My family has lived in Bridgeport for ages. I lived there for awhile. Bridgeport does have it’s nicer places, but the statement they made is true and hilarious! Why get upset? TV shows make fun of places all over the world and more. Honestly it’s a tv show get over it! Laugh!

    Dear Bridgeport,
I am a 14 year old boy from Connecticut. I understand that some of you take this ” Family Guy dissing Bridgeport thing” personnaly, but seriously, you need to develop a better sense of humor. Seth MacFarlane is a Connecticut native so it’s not like he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. And don’t try to sue them because there is this little thing called the First Amendment. Plus, he was not trying to hurt the people, he was making fun of the actual city. For instance, buildings.

I think this is a great opportunity to take most of the people that are bothered by the comments and look for a way to unite them towards improving Bridgeport in many ways.

I guess beauty is in the Eyes of the Beholder! If you are emotionally attached to Bridgeport these comments might seem offensive. If you are that offended it is time to act upon it and work to have a better Bridgeport.

See I don’t watch the show anymore but after seeing this clip all I can say is Wow… what an embarrasing portrayal of Bridgeport, one of the writers must’ve had a family member that had been laid off with the City, lol.

Maybe back in 1889, but since the 1980s I don’t really know about that.
