Last week the Connecticut Supreme Court ruled the state takeover of schools illegal and ordered a special election for four school board seats. Governor Dannel Malloy and legislative leaders at the urging of Mayor Bill Finch are examining a legislative fix to thwart a special election and keep schools under state control.
State control opponents argue this is about democracy, don’t allow the politicians to control school contracts and spending. Supporters of state control say, Well, do you like the way the schools were run?
We don’t live under a monarchy, say opponents.
We need state intervention to cure the chaos and support the kids, say supporters.
So, where do you come down on this?
This issue may ultimately be decided by voters. Mayor Bill Finch has empaneled a Charter Revision Commission to pose a question on the November ballot asking if voters prefer an appointed or elected school board.
