Thanksgiving Fun

by:

Yes, that is excitement in my “voice.” This is the holiday that isn’t about gifts and hoopla but rather about getting together with loved ones, enjoying a delicious meal and reflecting on all those things we are thankful for in our lives. I have looking for some fun little holiday-themed craft projects for the kiddos. Have you been to my “Holidays” board on Pinterest lately? I have some really fun ideas for crafts and decor. Why don’t you mosey on by?

Here are a few of the ideas I have pinned.

A couple recycled cereal boxes, spaghetti and paint and voila!

A twist on the classic orange-studded cloves – so pretty together!

Wouldn’t this little turkey project be a fun way to track your child’s growth every year? I thought so too!

I short list of some of the things I am thankful for: my amazing, healthy children, my super husband who does the dishes and the laundry, my family, a roof over my head, a job i love, lattes, baked goods, art, creativity, freedom…just to name a few.

I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving.

Gobble It Up!

by:

With Thanksgiving right around the corner I have been thinking about one of my favorite meals of the year. I am a huge fan of sides…green beans, cauliflower, squash, roasted potatoes, sweet potatoes and broccoli, to name a few, but of course it’s the turkey that is the star of the show. This year, consider buying your bird from a local farm that treats their birds humanely and without all the hormones and antibiotics that factory farms need to pump in their turkeys in order to keep them “healthy.” Here are a few options in Connecticut, but do an internet search in your state.

Ekonk Hill Turkey Farm – Out in Moosup (I know I had no idea we had a town in CT called Moosup) you’ll find this beautiful farm and see their happy turkeys hanging out in large fields of green. While you’re there, pick up some farm-baked pies, cookies, bread and ice cream. The kids will also love their corn maze.

White Gate Farm – In East Lyme White Gate Farm offers organic turkey, chickens, eggs and vegetables.  These pros sell their products to many area restaurants and also to Dinners at the Farm, “a series of benefit dinners celebrating Connecticut’s local farms, food and community as a way to generate awareness of the importance and vitality of our local farming community.” Keep up the good work.

Footsteps Farms – In Stonington, CT is Footsteps Farm. Don’t judge them by their website, they’re clearly spending their energy “producing humanely raised, grass fed pork, chickens, turkeys, beef, and other farm products.” I am looking forward to scheduling a visit to this farm.

I also stumbled across a website CT Farm Fresh Express that sells the products from area Connecticut farms or “artisans” as they call them. Perhaps there is a website like this for your area – so helpful.

I hope you have a happy, healthy turkey day.

Perfect Pumpkin

by:

As sad as I am that summer has bid us “Adieu,” I am happy to say “Bonjour” to one of fall’s bounties: pumpkins. Pumpkin pie, of course, but one must not forget about pumpkin soup, roasted pumpkin (and seeds), pumpkin muffins, pumpkin mousse and my latest favorite (and healthy) snack, pumpkin yogurt!

I made these pumpkin cupcakes for my daughter’s birthday to take to school – they were delicious and were a big hit!

For my mother’s birthday I found this low fat recipe for pumpkin mousse…well I intended to make her a low fat dessert but when I looked at the ingredients in “frozen whipped topping” a.k.a Cool Whip, I decided to make my own “whipped topping” by beating light whipping cream with a tablespoon of sugar. This was SO delicious! I made pumpkin muffins this weekend and had some pumpkin still left in the can. I mixed the remaining raw pumpkin with plain, organic yogurt, a little honey and a dash of cinnamon. Since my picky son loved the pumpkin mousse I thought I might trick him into eating a healthier version of it. My plan worked!

Hide fiber and beta-carotene in mac and cheese for my kids? Don’t mind if I do!

This pumpkin bisque recipes is intriguing – I may try it soon! And my toast will soon be happily slathered with pumpkin butter.

Happy eating…I mean fall.

Obsession: Black Window Panes

by:

I love this look – black window panes on a white wall. As anyone who knows me will attest, I am a gal who likes color – especially in the home…but this look could convince me to go stark…at least in one room.

It’s got a modern yet old-world look about it…I love juxtapositions like that in design.

Bedroom Makeover: The Big Reveal

by:

OK here it is. The “After” photos from my daughter’s bedroom makeover. Warning – the quality of some (OK, most) leave a lot to be desired – but you get the idea. So the room is not completely done – there are some tweaks I want to make but overall she was a happy camper with the transformation. This first photo is her reaction. Isn’t it sweet? You can see the before photos here.

This net “canopy” over her bed was the main thing I wanted to find as she had pointed out in one of her favorite books. It was a Goodwill find. Those mirrored frames above her bed need to be moved over to the right above the wicker basket.

Speaking of the wicker basket, I wanted something to store her stuffed animals in and when I drove past this basket on the side of the road I knew I had a winner. I’m thinking I might flip the lid over and have a board cut to fit inside so this could also act as a bed side table. Add that to the to-do list.

This table isn’t new but I moved it from one side of the room to another so I could create a little art station. She got a watercolor set for her birthday and since then has sat down everyday to paint. It’s so nice to see. The table and chairs were a find a few years ago from Goodwill. I painted them in Sherwin WIlliams “Funky Yellow.” I’m in love with that color! The litho above the table is from amazing artist Scott Wilton.

Here’s a detail of one of the baskets. It’s new from IKEA…they were so sweet I couldn’t resist.
This, people, is probably my favorite part of the room. I wanted to bring the purple over to the other side of the room somehow. I came up with the idea of doing a fat stripe and continuing it over the dresser – which has new knobs. That IKEA frame I bought a few years ago has stood empty all this time. I covered it with a sweet polka dot fabric. The lamp is vintage.
I reorganized her bookcase and found some pink storage boxes in clearance. Now I don’t have to see her doodads floating all over the place. Yay!
I found this little mirror at Goodwill. She is making good use of it already :)
That solid pewter heart was a recent tag sale find. Isn’t it awesome? She loves hearts!
I even organized her closet with a second bar that she can reach and we hung up her dress-up dresses.
The little sofa was salvaged from work so I dyed the cover purple to match. The grey cabinet is an old piece from IKEA. It was in her brother’s room. Coincidentally, her brother room also got a bit of a makeover. Stay tuned.
All this artwork on her clothesline has been created since her birthday! Can you tell I’m a proud mama?
There you have it folks. All in all I’m pretty happy with the outcome. I would have loved to change that pukey purple color on her walls but time did not allow. Maybe on the next trasnformation.

A Surprise Bedroom Makeover

by:

It’s my daughter’s 5th birthday today and I am so excited to re-do her bedroom for her. It will be a surprise. I am taking the day off so that when she comes home she will (hopefully, if my plans go well) have a new and improved bedroom. This what it looks like now. Not terrible but it needs some love, a touch of spunk and updating. That little kitchen set I found for her at Goodwill when she was two will not be staying. She and her brother still like to play with it so I’ll move it to his room. The Papasan Chair while appearing to be comfortable, actually is not very comfy. Anyone need a Papasan chair? I still want her to have a reading nook so I will replace it with a seat that I salvaged from work.

That last photo is a page my nugget ripped from a magazine and has asked me several times if she can have a room like it. It’s a touch too girly and over-done for me (I know it’s not my room but I would still have to see it everyday). I will take elements from this image, like the canopy and wall decorations, to incorporate into her new room. I will keep the little yellow table but move it to the other side of the room and get her a few shelves above  the table to use for her art supplies. This way she has a little art area (and the supplies aren’t within arms reach of her little brother.) I know now would be the time to change the purple color that I have complained about before but there just wouldn’t be enough time in the day to complete that task too. I’ll reveal the room re-do next week. Stay tuned!

Let There Be Light

by:

I still haven’t figured  the meaning of their name (and perhaps their isn’t one) but i am enamored with graypants‘ products none-the-less! They call themselves a conceptual design studio and luckily for us the company, with designers in Seattle and Amsterdam, turned their concept for lighting made out of recycled cardboard into a reality. Behold, Scraplights! Are you trying to figure out which room in the house you’d like to place one of these beauties? Yea, me too! Watch their awesome video to learn more about the company and see how this awesomeness is done!

The color, the pattern of the cardboard innards, the circles and the recycled aspect all in one product makes me swoon.

Cool Weather Comfort Food (Slow Cooker-Style)

by:

I am writing this post with a sweatshirt and socks on and I am not pleased! It’s about this time of year that I start to mourn the ending of summer. Not having to wear layers, longer days and barbecues are just a few of the things I love about summer. I’ll also miss veggies from the garden and the ease of having a salad (with a multitude of toppings) for dinner.

So how do I bring ease into dinner-making this fall? The Crock Pot, baby! We got the slow cooker as a wedding present and I think I can count on one hand the amount of times we have used it. Cleaning last weekend I found ours and decided that it was high time I rely on it to help with dinner. Here are some recipes I’m going to start with.

The family loves Indian food (yes even our toddler!). We have our favorite joint that makes the most amazing Chicken Tikka Masala. Now I don’t expect to rival them in flavor but even if I come close, I’ll be a happy camper. Chung-ah over at Damn Delicious has a recipe that sounds deelish. I think this is the first recipe I’ll try.

Real Simple has a recipe for bean and spinach enchiladas that looks so good I’m getting hungry as I look at the photo! I’m also drooling over the squash lasagna. Right?

And I don’t know about you but I love my desserts. I have to have something sweet at the end of a meal. I had a hard time choosing just one slow cooker dessert from this collection but I finally chose to feature the Gingerbread Cake Pudding. Doesn’t it look AMAZING? But seriously, check out the other recipes too.

OK, now I can deal with the crisp fall air a bit better.
