If genes have put you or your loved ones at increased risk of diabetes-related stroke you may want to start splashing olive oil onto your salads and snacking on nuts.

Researchers have found that following a Mediterranean diets that are specifically rich in these two foods stuffs seem to have a lower risk of suffering a stroke than people who simply ate a low-fat diet. Indeed researchers at Tufts University’s USDA Human Nutrition Research Institute on Aging, found that even when study participants had a genetic mutation that put them at risk of diabetes (and related strokes) those who ate heart healthy nuts and olive oil had a stroke risk comparable to healthy study participants without the mutation.

The study was reported recently in the journal Diabetes Care.
