I’d seen the sign and heard the buzz…but it wasn’t until a Groupon came to my inbox that I realized Liquid Lunch had opened in Fairfield (they have 3 other Connecticut locations in Shelton and Milford). Doors were open for business about two weeks ago, with a Grand Opening slated soon. The name alone makes me smile— no, not that liquid lunch made famous by boozing businessmen and irresponsible college students alike–this Liquid Lunch is all about soup!!
Yes, Liquid Lunch, serves soup, along with sandwiches (or “sammies” as they call them). There are eleven soups daily—six of which remain the same, five are daily specials. The six standards include Chicken Noodle, Beef Barley, French Onion, Tomato Basil, Split Pea with Ham and Vegetarian Lentil. Some of the specials on the day I visited were Mushroom-Crab, Butternut Chicken, and Chicken and Wild Rice. I tried one from each category—the Vegetarian Lentil and the Mushroom-Crab. The lentil was light and delicious and was studded with colorful veggies including carrots and zucchini. The mushroom was very flavorful with specks of crab throughout, potato and a rich broth. Both were so hot I scalded my tongue (I just couldn’t wait to dig in!). Soups come in four sizes ranging from 8 oz (perfect for a light lunch), up to 32 oz (perfect to take home to your family for dinner). I was sort of wishing they came with a piece of bread instead of crackers, but it’s just as well because as the holidays approach, who needs the extra carbs?
The menu is very large and displayed on boards hung on the wall. Oddly, I had to really search for where they listed the soups. They were on a tiny whiteboard way at the back of the restaurant. I sort of figured a place called “Liquid Lunch” would have the soups more prominently displayed. Instead the larger menu boards list the many, many sandwiches and salads from which to choose. On this visit I didn’t try either, but I have to say they all looked pretty good. If you just can’t decide, you can do a “Half and Half”—-a small soup with either half of a sandwich or half of a salad salad, or half of a sandwich with any half salad. I also appreciate that you can order just a half portion (sandwich or salad) on it’s own for those days when you’re just not that hungry.
Liquid Lunch is very conveniently located in the Brick Walk Promenade, right near Pink Sprinkles and across from Island Outfitters. Plenty of parking too. The seating inside, however, is not so plentiful, so if you want to eat-in, be sure to get there early (when I went all the tables were full a few minutes after noon).
Overall, Liquid Lunch is a very welcome addition to both the Brick Walk and Fairfield Center. That end of the Post Road was in need of a good take-out lunch eatery, and Liquid Lunch nicely fits the bill.
