Facebook joins the daily deals arena

I am a Groupon fanatic. While the offers don’t always apply to me (obviously) I am almost as excited to see what appears in my inbox each day as I am to open a snail mail greeting card.

Sites like Groupon (Living Social, Google Offers launched last week, etc.) send you an email each morning sharing the deal of the day. The promotion — a $50 restaurant gift certificate for $25; cheap laser hair removal — must be purchased within that day-long window, but you can redeem the deal at any time.

Now the social networking King Pin, Facebook, is getting in the game with their Facebook Deals. Unlike some of the other sites, that have plenty of solo-type activities (nail salons, lunch promotions), the Facebook feature will focus on being, well, social. Essentially, their offers will encourage you do to group activities with friends — wine tastings, white water rafting — for a discounted price.

Deals are currently available in Altanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego and San Francisco. If you aren’t close to one of those cities, you can sign up for updates when they come to your area if you go to that Facebook.com/deals page.
