Walmart is planning to open earlier this year than last, and to date, earlier than anyone else has announced so far: 10 p.m., according to news reports.
From the Christian Science Monitor:
Walmart is getting an early start to Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year. The discount retail giant released its Black Friday ad Thursday, announcing that this year the store’s doors will open at 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving night for discounts on home items, clothing, and toys. Electronics will go on sale two hours later, at midnight.
Among the items you can grab at 10 p.m. after your feast: a $67 ping pong table, a slew of DVDs for $1.96 apiece, and a 4-quart Crock-Pot for under $10 (regular price is closer to $25).
Marketwatch.com says this move was just a matter of time:
It used to be considered bad form to encroach on this most American and yet least commercialized holiday. No cards, no gifts. Somehow it has survived as a time for family, friends, reflection and a meal rooted in a simple tradition nearly 400 years old.
But Thanksgiving has been under threat for years.
Why else does Santa Claus bring up the rear of Macy’s Inc. New York Thanksgiving Day parade?
Other earlybirds announced last month they’d be breaking with tradition and opening at midnight.

The really sad thing is that people will show up and shop. Greed is still rampant.
Time to stop shopping at this most anti-American of American businesses. Their policy of importing cheaply made crap from China has destroyed a good part of our industry and replace these high paying jobs with poorly paying jobs at WalMart that offer few if any benefits. This company is run by un-American cretins who don’t even respect Thanksgiving….one of the most beloved and inclusive of American holidays.
It is just a gimmick that the american people fall for there was a time when the stores were not open and families spent the day together now, instead of family time. We run to the stores to shop not thinking about the people who would like to be with their families but have to work. Greed drive these ridiculous store hours, the state collects taxes and the store make a profit and people don’t reflect on what they are blessed with only get into credit card debit. The blue laws should be revoked.
