NBA player has dramatic weight loss

by:

Some players enjoyed a lazy extended off-season, gaining a little bit of weight during the NBA lockout.

Not Kendrick Perkins.

He worked off 30 pounds during the offeseason and reported to Oklahoma City Thunder camp looking like a different player than during last season’s run to the Western Conference finals.

Perkins was up to 298 pounds after missing most of last season following knee surgery, and he had hoped to get down to 275 for training camp. He ended up losing more during the extended offseason and reported at 267 pounds, looking like an entirely different player.

“I just worked hard this summer. I was disappointed in myself last year in the playoffs,” he said. “I don’t like to blame anything on injuries but at the same time, I was out there so I should have made a difference. I just wanted to come back healthy and give it a shot … and just to show what I could do and be more productive.”

Perkins said he spent about three hours many mornings during the offseason lifting weights and doing conditioning work to help get him out of his knee braces, then he’d get up shots and play pickup games whenever he could. He also hired a nutritionist to help get him slimmed back down to 275 pounds.

“I was just eating whatever I wanted. You have to change up your diet a little bit. But there was a lot of things that was healthy on the menu that I actually liked,” Perkins said. “I feel a ton better. … It’s just a sacrifice you’ve got to put in.

“You’ve really just got to be honest and look yourself and look yourself in the mirror and go from there.”

At the end of last season in Oklahoma City, the 6-foot-9 Perkins was struggling to jump high enough to dunk. He’s not expecting to be in the slam dunk contest this season, but he’s at least back on the right track.

“Obviously, when you get lighter, you move quicker and you jump higher. I’ve never been a real leaper but I’ve got some kind of hops now,” Perkins said. “It’s all good.”

If you love Mountain Dew, read this

by:

Mountain Dew has a flame retardant in it.

There’s BVO in there. What’s BVO, you say? It’s a flame retardant for plastics aka brominated vegetable oil. It’s banned in Europe and Japan. But it’s there in your Mountain Dew. And your Squirt, Fanta Orange, Sunkist Pineapple, Gatorade Thirst Quencher (only orange flavor), Powerade Strawberry Lemonade and Fresca Original Citrus.

Is this a bad thing, necessarily? Depends on who’s talking.

The FDA has set safety limits on it, but the Environmental Health News, a group of online journalists, have issued a report saying this chemical has had a cloudy history.

Gizmodo.com reports:

According to the Environmental Health News, BVO contains “bromine atoms which weigh down the citrus flavoring so it mixes with sugar water” instead of floating to the top. Basically, BVO gives soda more consistent flavoring. That sounds good! But BVO is also added to polystyrene foam cushions in furniture and plastics in electronics because BVO can slow down the chemical reactions that cause a fire. Yuck. Is that what we want to be drinking?

Environmental Health News is reporting that there is renewed interest in reassessing BVO because of reports like this:

After a few extreme soda binges – not too far from what many video gamers regularly consume – a few patients have needed medical attention for skin lesions, memory loss and nerve disorders, all symptoms of overexposure to bromine. Other studies suggest that BVO could be building up in human tissues. In mouse studies, big doses caused reproductive and behavioral problems.

… Brominated flame retardants lately are under intense scrutiny because research has shown that they are building up in people’s bodies, including breast milk, around the world.

Real story behind Marine’s ‘cheating girlfriend’ revenge?

Think twice before cheating on a Marine.

The revealing anecdote of a deployed Marine dealing with a cheating girlfriend has become a web sensation on Facebook and social media site BuzzFeed.

The Marine is unidentified, and there are no details to prove the validity of the story.

In fact, the story bears a striking similarity to an episode of M*A*S*H titled “Identity Crisis.” In the episode, Marine James Mathis is crestfallen when his girlfriend coldly writes a letter ending their relationship and asking for photos of her to be returned.

Hawkeye decides to help and collects photos of various girls from around camp. He suggests that Mathis send the photos to his ex with a letter saying he can’t remember what she looks like, and ask her to remove her photos and send back the rest.

Mathis loves the idea and adds that the package should be sent postage due.

Compare that to the viral hit below. (Caution: Some of the language could be considered vulgar.)

Watch NBC’s Chuck Todd flip the bird on TV

by:

MSNBC political analyst Chuck Todd apologized Wednesday for flipping the bird on national television in what appeared to be a light-hearted moment in which he may not have known he was on air.

Politico reports:

Todd was apparently unaware that he was live on television and reacted to something that happened off-screen while standing next to David Gregory, moderator of NBC’s “Meet the Press.” They were both smiling.

At the time, the camera cut to Todd and Gregory just as “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski introduced the two as the next guests. The show then faded to commercial.

Gawker took the incident and made it into an indictment of the msnbc show Morning Joe:

Is Morning Joe the most offensive morning news and talk show on cable television? Seriously, it’s like you can’t turn it on without catching something vulgar and indecent.

Most in the blogosphere are just giving Todd the big tsk-tsk, like TVNewser:

Oh Chuck Todd, you should know this by now: when you’re in a newsroom-studio that broadcasts a three-hour morning show, there are cameras everywhere, and you might be on at anytime.

Sandusky’s lawyer gives phone number for gay sex line

by:

Jerry Sandusky’s attorney really isn’t doing him any favors.

Sandusky, the former Penn State assistant coach who has been accused of over 50 counts of sexual assault against young boys, waived his preliminary hearing this morning. His attorney, Joseph Amendola, then addressed the media in an impassioned — if horribly misguided — manner.

Amendola announced that anyone who believes that Sandusky is a child molester should call “1-800-REALITY.” The folks at Deadspin did, and this is what they discovered:

1-800-REALITY is a gay sex line that offers “the hottest place for triple-x action … Just 99 cents per minute.”

Whoops.

This isn’t the first time Amendola has come under the red-hot spotlight. According to a report, Amendola allegedly impregnated a teenage girl when he was 49 years old. He later married her, although they are now separated.

Honey, I shrunk the Hummer

by:

The Hummer is back, but it won’t remind you much of the gas guzzling monster SUV.

It’s more like the “Honey, I shrunk the kids” version.

My Electric Car scaled down the design of Hummer H2 and turned the gas guzzler into an all-electric car. Doesn’t sound anything like that V-8 monster that used to be popular on U.S. roads?

The car, which is only sold in Europe at the moment, gets more than 60 miles on a single charge, The company gives owners the option of upgrading to a lithium-ion battery that will boost the range to more than 100 miles.

The Hummer HX doesn’t have the roomy interior that its forefather had. It only has room for two people, and it doesn’t have a ton of cargo space either. But you can’t really blame it, since its only 9 feet long (roughly half as long as the H2).

According to MEV, General Motors planned to release the Hummer HX model in the United States, believing that it “would have saved them.” However, after the brand was shut down, My Electric Vehicle stepped in to buy the design.

There isn’t a ton of information on how fast this thing goes, but it’s got plenty of options, including a convertible, heated seats, DVD system and 18-inch rims. It also comes in burnt orange and other terribly bright colors.

Walmart shoplifter stabs worker at Georgia store

by:

Walmart (AP)

Walmart can be a dangerous place, especially if you live in northern Georgia.

A suspected shoplifter stabbed a security officer in the parking lot of a Walmart this weekend.

The location was the same store where several shoppers recently found syringes tucked into their purchases.

The 32-year-old woman has been charged with aggravated assault for stabbing the worker who was chasing her with a multi-tool knife, WXIA reported.

Other Walmart stores have also had their share of incidents, including a woman making meth in a Tulsa store and the infamous pepper-spraying Black Friday shopper in a store near L.A.
