Kayaker rescues injured dog swimming in Gulf of Mexico

by:

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A man kayaking in the Gulf of Mexico rescued an injured dog that was swimming offshore after fleeing when his owner was struck and killed by a car.

The bizarre and sad tale unfolded Saturday afternoon on Siesta Key, a bucolic island community about 40 miles south of St. Petersburg that boasts some of Florida’s most beautiful white sand beaches.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 53-year-old Donna Chen was jogging with her dog Barney, a Hungarian Vizsla.

As the pair jogged down the sidewalk, patrol officers said 22-year-old Blake Talman drove away from the nearby beach while drunk, got into one crash, and then drove away. That’s when he struck Chen and her dog, officers said.

Chen died at the scene, but the dog ran away.

Later that afternoon, Rory O’Connor — a tourist from Bellingham, Wash. — was kayaking and fishing near Siesta Key when he spotted a dog swimming about a half mile offshore in the blue water.

“I pulled him into the kayak and he was really scared,” said O’Connor. “He was shaking a lot. Had a bunch of wounds on his leg and was bleeding.” O’Connor captured the rescue on a video camera that he uses to record his fishing adventures.

O’Connor took the dog ashore. His sister, who was on the beach with her family, identified the canine as a Vizsla and suggested the dog might have a microchip. The family then took the dog to a nearby vet.

The dog did have a microchip, and the veterinarian’s office contacted Chen’s family — and learned about the accident. It’s still a mystery how or why the dog ended up a mile from where the crash happened and in the water.

O’Connor said Barney is recovering, and said he is thankful that the dog is back with the Chen family.

“We thought the dog was a very special dog,” O’Connor told The Associated Press during a phone interview Tuesday.

Authorities say Talman was charged with DUI manslaughter and is being held at the Sarasota County Jail without bail. It’s unclear whether he has retained an attorney. Police declined to comment on the dog because the case is a vehicular homicide and is under investigation.

Man who lost wife in Tucson shootings says Giffords makes him sick

Gabrielle Giffords, left, leads the Pledge of Allegiance accompanied by her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, at the start of a memorial vigil remembering the victims and survivors one year after the Arizona congresswoman was wounded in a shooting that killed six others, Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012, in Tucson, Ariz. A 77-year-old Arizona man whose wife was killed in last year’s mass shooting in Tucson said the sight of fellow victim Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, makes him want to vomit, according to the UK’s Daily Mail online.

George Morris, 77, was shot in the leg and back in the attack just over a year ago as he tried to protect his wife from the gunman. Dorothy Morris, 76, was killed after the couple had gone to the Safeway supermarket to quiz Ms Giffords’ political opinions.

Mr Morris, who describes himself as ‘ultra-conservative’, even refused a visit from President Obama while he recovered in hospital following the shootings in Arizona.

According to the Daily Mail, the Morrises had gone to Gifford’s event to question her support of Obama’s policies, including health care reform.

Mr Morris told the Arizona Republic newspaper his opinion of Ms Gifford and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly: ‘Every time I see them on TV, it makes me want to vomit.’

He also blamed Mr Kelly for his wife’s death, adding: ‘I’d like to debate our dear captain astronaut (and ask) why he didn’t have security. My wife would still be alive.’

Morris, a former Democrat, had campaigned for Gifford’s Republican opponent in the 2010 election, Jesse Kelly, the paper said.

The retired Marine and airline pilot said he didn’t believe Giffords should still be in office, according to the Daily Mail.

He and his wife met in high school and were married 54 years.

‘I can tell you no man has ever loved a woman more than I loved my wife,’ he said.

At a candlelight vigil Sunday to mark the one-year anniversary of the deadly shootings by Jared Lee Loughner, Giffords led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The congresswoman – who has struggled to re-learn to walk after being shot in the head – stepped onstage to cheers from the crowd.

Facebook app allows you to have your “last word”

by:

Social media sites have turned into memorials after people die, but what if you could say something from the grave?

A new Facebook app, appropriately dubbed “If I die,” allows Facebook users to create a video or a text message that will appear after they die.

The app works by picking three trustees from your Facebook friends list who will receive a message asking them to confirm your death. After all three confirm the user’s passing, a pre-recorded video or written message will be published on the user’s Facebook wall.

So a bit creepy, right?

The app was developed by an Israel-based startup company that say it specializes in “time capsule services and products.”

Here is a look at the app:

Colorado teen’s yearbook photo called too sexy

by:

Sydney Spies is an 18-year-old senior at Durango High School in Colorado, but her classmates may not have a picture to remember her by in the yearbook.

The reason the yearbook editors say, is that the senior photo she submitted is too sexy. The photo shows Spies in a short yellow skirt and midriff baring, strapless top. Spiers calls the photo “artistic.”

“As seniors we all have a right to express who we want to be. There are students with their footballs if they like sports. And if I’m into modeling why should I be censored for that?” she told Matt Lauer on the Today show this morning.

The five student editors of the yearbook disagree, saying the outfit in the photo is inappropriate and will not be published. A second photo Spiers submitted that showed her in a lacy, almost see-through black dress, was also declined.

“We are an award-winning yearbook. We don’t want to diminish the quality with something that can be seen as unprofessional,” student editor Brian Jaramillo told the Durango Herald.

According to the story, the principal agrees with the decision.

The photo can actually still run in the yearbook, but Spiers will have to place it in the ad section at the back and pay $300.

Tourist survives after bungee cord snaps

by:

An Australian tourist survived after a bungee cord failed as she jumped off a bridge, according to The Guardian.

Erin Langworthy leapt from a bridge more than 360 feet above the Zambezi river at Victoria Falls, the world’s largest waterfall. As she reached the bottom, the cord snapped sending her head first into the water, the newspaper reported.

The 22-year-old was able to swim to the side of the river despite her feet still being tied together.

“It was quite scary because a couple of times the rope actually got caught on some rocks or debris,” she told Australia’s Channel Nine television network. “I actually had to swim down and yank the bungee cord out of whatever it was caught on to make it to the surface.”

Langworthy spent a week in the hospital after the incident.

Star Wars fans can try black-bunned Darth Vader burger at French fast-food restaurant

by:

Quick special-edition Star Wars burgers

French burger chain Quick is inviting diners to “choose their side of the force,” offering dark burgers and jedi burgers to correspond with characters in the series, which is being re-released in 3D.

Those who side with Darth Vader end up with a double-decker cheeseburger on a jet-black bun. Yoda’s version appears to have some sort of cheese curd on it. (Or are they marshmallows?)

The Quick Star Wars burgers will be served between January 31 and March 1, at locations in France and Belgium.

Burger King, McDonald’s, Whataburger: Take note.
