Sally Ride comes out in obituary

Sally Ride’s family disclosed in her obituary that she is survived by her partner of 27 years, Tam O’Shaughnessy.

According to BuzzFeed:

The pioneering scientist was, a statement from Sally Ride Science announced, survived by “Tam O’Shaughnessy, her partner of 27 years.”

With that simple statement — listed alongside her mother, Joyce; her sister, Bear; her niece, Caitlin and nephew, Whitney — Ride came out.

Bear Ride, talking with BuzzFeed, said today, “We consider Tam a member of the family.”

The first U.S. woman to fly in space, Ride was married to astronaut Steve Hawley from 1982 until 1987.

Ride and O’Shaughnessy, who met at the age of 12 when both were aspiring tennis players, were co-authors of several books. O’Shaughnessy is a psychology PhD and former pro tennis player, according to Sally Ride Science.

    I read the original and never considered it to be a “coming out” or a statement of sexual preference by Ms. Ride but rather an acknowlegement of a close relationship with another person. What the hell does a personal matter have to do with the news and what kind of parents raised a person that publicizes other peoples most intimate matters.
