Fox News inadvertently airs live suicide

by:

Fox News inadvertently aired a live suicide while broadcasting helicopter footage of a carjacking suspect in Arizona.

Anchor Shepard Smith, visibly upset, calls for the live shot to be pulled, but not in time — Viewers saw Smith repeating “get off it,” after the gunshot, indicating he was watching the video on a delay.

The network cut into commercial immediately after.

Smith says Fox was on a five-second delay, but the video was not stopped in time, he later apologized for airing the suicide, saying “That was wrong, and that won’t happen again on my watch, and I’m sorry.”

Update: Fox News issued this statement Friday afternoon:

“We took every precaution to avoid any such live incident by putting the helicopter pictures on a five second delay. Unfortunately, this mistake was the result of a severe human error and we apologize for what viewers ultimately saw on the screen.” – Michael Clemente, EVP, News Editorial

Shepard Smith’s On-Air Apology

“Well, some explaining to do. While we were taking that car chase and showing it to you live when the guy pulled over and got out of the vehicle we went on delay. So that’s why I didn’t talk for about ten seconds. We created a five second delay as if you were to bleep back your DVR five seconds that’s what we did with the picture we were showing you so that we would see in the studio what was happening five seconds before you did so that if anything went horribly wrong we’d be able to cut away from it without subjecting you to it. And we really messed up and we’re all very sorry. That didn’t belong on TV. We took every precaution we knew how to take to keep that from being on TV and I personally apologize to you that that happened. Sometimes we see a lot of things that we don’t let get to you because it’s not time appropriate, it’s insensitive, it’s just wrong. And that was wrong and that won’t happen again on my watch and I’m sorry. We’ll update you on what happened with that guy and how that went down tonight on the FOX Report. I’m sorry.”

Man fakes potential plane crash, proposes to girlfriend

Marriage proposals, it seems, are no longer about reaching across the table during dinner and holding out a ring. No, people are getting engaged in grandiose ways. Just last night, Giuliana Rancic told us how Bill proposed in a helicopter (and don’t think for a second I didn’t want to shout out “I was proposed to soaring above the trees, tooooo:) ).

Some men bring out flash mobs for the asking and others are posting signs on guardrails over on Washington Avenue Extension. Also, a couple weeks ago we heard about that man who faked his death to propose. And then … there is Ryan Thompson. He took his girlfriend for a ride in an airplane, then said the controls weren’t working and asked her to read off the emergency procedures.

The final words on the checklist were, “Will you marry me?”

As my colleague Tim Neff asked, adorably cute, or horribly manipulative, you make the call?

I’m going with manipulative. Romantic gestures laced with jokes are one thing, but potentially scaring someone to the point that they could all but have an anxiety attack is sick and odd and the sign of someone who doesn’t understand the difference between dangerous and funny.

Apparently, she was not unimpressed, seeing as she said “yes.”

Resident Evil’s gruesome publicity stunt

Warning: Disturbing content (NSFW)

Visitors to London’s Smithfield Meat Market might find they’ve lost their appetites when they walk by one butcher shop. Video game maker Capcom is drumming up enthusiasm for its October release of “Resident Evil 6″ with a grisly display of raw meat formed to resemble human body parts.

“The key thing for us is to make it look authentic,” PR rep Dan Walsh said to Reuters. “We really wanted to make it look like a butcher shop.”

Proceeds from sales of the “human body parts” will go to benefit the Limbless Association, a non-profit group that supports people who have lost their limbs.

‘Worst death scene ever’ is a fake, original still pretty good

by:

Perhaps you’ve seen this video around today, it’s the anointed “worst/best movie death scene ever.”

The movie is early 1970s Turkish classic “Kareteci Kiz” or “Karate Girl.” According to IMDB, the complicated plot boils down to this: Woman’s husband is murdered, she goes on karate rampage against the murderers, killing them one by one.

Unfortunately, the man’s scream in the above clip appears to have been added later. As Geek Tyrant points out, the original is without scream (go to 2:10 for the death scene):

Whichever version is edited, it’s better without the screaming. Why isn’t he screaming? He feels no pain. Or too much pain?

Which version do you prefer?

America’s best cities ranked – Who’s No. 1?

A big list of “America’s 50 Best Cities” makes for a good bar argument. Bars are even one of the ranking factors.

Businessweek.com and Bloomberg teamed up to release a ranking of the best U.S. cities, and two West Coast cities were at the top of the list. San Francisco and Seattle were Nos. 1 and 2 for urban living.

The site used several factors to determine the rankings:

“Leisure attributes (the number of restaurants, bars, libraries, museums, professional sports teams, and park acres by population); educational attributes (public school performance, the number of colleges, and graduate degree holders), economic factors (2011 income and June and July 2012 unemployment), crime, and air quality.

Major professional league and minor league teams, as well as U.S.-based teams belonging to international leagues in that city were included. The greatest weighting was placed on leisure amenities, followed by educational metrics and economic metrics, and then crime and air quality.”

San Francisco earned high marks for its thriving economy, cultural centers and nightlife in the Mission and Castro districts. Seattle was cited for beautiful vistas and clean air, among other things. Smaller cities like Portland, Ore. (fifth), Denver (sixth) and Austin, Texas (eighth) dominated the top 10.

Houston came in at No. 22 and was cited for its large parks and food scene. San Antonio was 30th. Bay Area cities Oakland (31st) and San Jose (33rd) also made the list.

Here are some of the top cities in the U.S., according to the rankings:

by:

The “Bagel Head” body modification trend is continuing to grow in Japan and, with all its recent press, could start spreading. The process involves getting a saline solution injection under the skin of the forehead so that it fills up, and then pushing in the center creating a bagel look.
