N. Korea ‘We Are the World’ video dreams of a destroyed New York

video grab

This should be familiar to Call of Duty players

As North Korea threatens to conduct a third nuclear test, its official state media website, Uriminzokkiri, has released a bizarre propaganda video that borrows images from the video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to illustrate a missile attack on the Big Apple.

The animated dream sequence, which shows a man slumbering as a Muzak-style version of “We Are the World” plays, starts out as an apparent tribute to the Korean space program. A rocket launches, a cartoonish ship orbits the Earth and the nation rejoices.

Call of Duty hijacked for propaganda

But then the focus shifts to the United States. Soon missiles are raining down on New York, and high-rises are ablaze.

The UK Guardian translated the Korean-language caption accompanying the firestorm:

“Somewhere in the United States, black clouds of smoke are billowing. It seems that the nest of wickedness is ablaze.”

It’s all pretty comical. Or would be if North Korea weren’t about to detonate a real nuclear device.

  2. Andrew says:

After the recent escalation in its rhetoric, the NK may have exhausted all the tricks it has in its bullying tactics.
It seems it is likely to face a situation where it would lose face when it is ignored by all others.
The international community should not resume or even consider to resume any talks with NK until it backs down by itself totally and completely.
China should reduce its trade and particularly aid with NK each time the NK plays bully, to make NK’s life more difficulty to send signals that its wayward bully will not work in its own interests but only the contrary.
