Fire places recalled for explosion risk

Thousands of gas fireplaces sold nationwide over the past four years are being recalled because gas can build up the unit’s burner area, creating a possible explosion.

Minnesota-based Hussong Manufacturing is recalling about 13,600 direct vent gas fireplaces and gas fireplace inserts. The units were sold around the country between October 2009 and April 2013. The 22 models being recalled were sold under three brand names: Kozy Heat Fireplaces, Ambiance Fireplaces and Stellar Hearth Products.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Hussong has received at least nine reports of gas being prematurely released and exploding. The incidents resulted in minor property damage and in two cases abrasions.

The CPSC says consumers should immediately stop using the recalled fireplaces and fireplace inserts, turn off the gas to the units and contact the dealer where the unit was purchased or Hussong Manufacturing to have the ignition board on the fireplace main control module replaced free of charge.

Hussong Manufacturing can be reached by calling (800) 253-4904 between 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday, or online at,, or, then clicking on “Recall Information” for more information.
