The wacky world of the Eurovision Song Contest

Forget all that E.U. ‘we are all brothers’ nonsense, Europeans are fiercely patriotic and right now a battle royal of nationalism is brewing…in Malmö, Sweden.

But this ain’t the Euro Cup, we’re talking about the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest and it’s your chance to see some seriously entertaining musical acts duke it out for the crown. Basically, if the Super Bowl and Balki from ‘Perfect Strangers’ had a baby, it would look like Eurovision, only with less hair gel.

Personally as a Hellenic American, I’m pulling for Koza Mostra, the Greek folk/punk/Balkan/ska-ish band featuring super gangsta baglamadaki player Agathon Iakovidis to kick all the other malakas to the curb.

The competition is tough, however. The Greek’s aren’t as dreamy as Azerbaijan’s Farid Mammadov, as sequined as the Latvian boy band PeR, as hot or as blonde as Norway’s Margaret Berger — and Gor Sujyan, the lead singer of Armenia’s Dorians has them beat in the unibrow department.

Now in its 58th year, Eurovision is billed as the largest non-sporting event in the world and, like football (ahem, soccer), since the United States doesn’t legitimately compete, we’ve never actually watched it. We probably should since it’s guaranteed to be vastly more entertaining than watching a bunch of dudes chase a ball around for 90 minutes and then end in a tie.

Oh yeah, and a bunch of it’s in English, so you won’t have to makeup your own lyrics.

WHEN: Saturday, May 18th at 21:00 Central European Summer Time…um…that would be 3 p.m. EST.

Gazan smugglers going underground to bring in KFC

A smuggler carries food from Kentucky Fried Chicken to be delivered through an underground tunnel linking the Gaza Strip to Egypt

Finger lickin’ good it may be, but this is taking things a little too far.

Some residents of Gaza have taken to smuggling in fried chicken and all the fixin’s from neighboring Egypt through an elaborate process involving wire transfers and tunnels. I’m not even kidding, I read this on the internets.

The New York Times reported today that an enterprising young entrepreneur named Khalil Efrangi has made four of these runs totally about 100 meals, saying “it’s our right to enjoy that taste the other people all over the world enjoy.”

Border crossings are tightly controlled by Israel and Egypt by a so-called blockade that has been in place since 2007. Getting a bucket original recipe is hardly the most pressing issue for most Gazans, but as Egrangi puts it, “I accepted this challenge to prove that Gazans can be resilient despite the restrictions.”

What European country is the most arrogant?

by:

The French are the most arrogant people on the planet, right? Just look at this totally non-fake example of an actual Parisian.

That’s the stereotype anyway, but now Pew Research has actually released polling data on stereotyping within the European Union — and it’s interesting.

According to Pew, the French even think they are the most arrogant. Italy, Spain and Greece, however, all think it’s the German’s. (They probably shouldn’t say this out loud since the German public pretty much owns Southern Europe through bailouts)

Other interesting findings:

Italy thinks that Italy is the least trustworthy, which would be obvious if you’ve ever hung out at my bocce club.

Half of Poland doesn’t trust Germany (maybe the other half was born after 1945).

Everybody else trusts the Germans most, except the Greeks, who think the Germans also the least compassionate.

108271996(Note: Not actually Jack Wiegand, 20)

In his quest to become the youngest pilot to ever circle the globe solo, 20-year-old Jack Wiegand of Frenso, California, had to call his mom when he realized he left his passport back in the states.

According to the Fresno Bee, Wiegand crossed his first international border for a stop in a remote area of Quebec when he realized he left his passport in a copy machine before he left.

Jack’s mom made some calls, located the passport and arranged for it to be overnighted it to her stranded son.

Let’s just home Jack doesn’t also forget Mother’s Day.

Kidnap suspect’s son had written about case

The son of the man suspected of kidnapping and holding captive three teens for over a decade in Cleveland, wrote about the case in 2004, just months after the abductions.

Ariel Castro, then a journalism student, shares the same name with his father, was was arrested yesterday when Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight were all found alive after disappearing between 2002 and 2004. Local NBC affiliate WKYC-TV first reported the story and contacted the younger Castro, who expressed shock at the allegations lodged against his father.

The 2004 article titled “Gina DeJesus’ disappearance has changed her neighborhood” ran in the Plain Press, a community newspaper based in Cleveland:

Since April 2, 2004 , the day 14-year-old Gina DeJesus was last seen on her way home from Wilbur Wright Middle School , neighborhood residents have been taken by an overwhelming need for caution. Parents are more strictly enforcing curfews, encouraging their children to walk in groups, or driving them to and from school when they had previously walked alone.

“You can tell the difference,” DeJesus’ mother, Nancy Ruiz said. “People are watching out for each other’s kids. It’s a shame that a tragedy had to happen for me to really know my neighbors. Bless their hearts, they’ve been great.”

On Cleveland ’s west side, it is difficult to go any length of time without seeing Gina’s picture on telephone poles, in windows, or on cars along the busy streets.

“People are really looking out for my daughter,” Ruiz said.
