Texas columnist discovers it’s not illegal to vote in a Big Bird costume

The Austin American Statesmen humor columnist, John Kelso, discovered that it’s not illegal in Texas to vote in a Big Bird costume.

Kelso writes that he decided to vote in a Big Bird costume, even though he would have preferred to dress as Daffy Duck or Tweety Bird, after Mitt Romney said in a debate that he would cut funding to PBS.

The line to get in and vote was long. Edd (the personal security guard) and I stood in it for more than half an hour. The Bird suit was like Lady Gaga — hot and itchy. An old guy standing in line in front of me the whole time was trying to ignore me, and he was doing a pretty good job of it. He probably thought I was an idiot. But a lot of women wanted to take my picture.

“I’ve got to get a picture of Big Bird going to vote,” one woman said. “That’s very good.”

“I shaved my legs for this?” Edd said.

“Vote right, Big Bird,” said a woman who was walking by. Maybe she was a Republican.

‘Bronco Bamma’ girl expresses what we all feel deep down about the elections

by:

Meet Abby. She’s just your average red-haired, blue-eyed four year old but from now on she may be forever known as the “Bronco Bamma Girl” after her mother posted the following video of her crying because she just can’t stand to listen to anymore election 2012 talk.

“I’m tired of Bronco Bamma and Mitt Romney,” she says.

Aren’t we all, Abby? Aren’t we all?

“It’ll be over soon Abby. The election will be over soon,” says her mother.

Let’s all remind ourselves of that.

As an aside: the first person to post a photo of themselves in a Bronco Bamma Halloween costume wins the internet.

Chick-fil-A reportedly reverses decision to fund anti-gay groups

by:

The Chicago alderman whose opposition to Chick-fil-A over the restaurant owner’s  santi-gay marriage stance made national headlines last month, has announced the company has agreed to stop funding those organizations, according to the Chicago Tribune.

A press release posted on a Chicago-based civil rights advocacy group web site quotes a letter said to have been sent to the alderman from Chick-fil-A’s Senior Director of Real Estate”

“The WinShape Foundations is now taking a much closer look at the organizations it considers helping, and in that process will remain true to its stated philosophy of not supporting organizations with political agendas.” Winshape, a non-profit funded by Chick-fil-a, has donated millions of dollars to anti-LGBT groups, including some classified as hate groups, such as Focus on the Family and the National Organization for Marriage. In meetings the company executives clarified that they will no longer give to anti-gay organizations.

An internal memo declaring the company will “treat every person with honor, dignity and respect-regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation and gender” and that their “intent is not to engage in political or social debates,” was also said to have been distributed and included in an official company document called “Chick-fil-A: Who We Are.”

The Chicago Tribune notes the language is similar to a July 19 Facebook post the company made:

The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect – regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender. We will continue this tradition in the over 1,600 Restaurants run by independent Owner/Operators. Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.

Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy previously told the Baptist Press the company supported “the biblical definition of family.”

The stance caused a controversy with some calling for a boycott of the restaurant, while others came out en masse to support the stance including staging a “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.”

In July, Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, declared Aug. 1 national “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day,” in support the chain owner’s recent comments against gay marriage and supporting the right to free speech and thousands flocked to the franchises to show their support.

Meet Houston’s littlest 12-year-old DJ sensation

by:

Michael Paulsen: Chronicle photo

She’s only 4 feet, 9 inches tall and nearly a decade away from the legal drinking age.  But give her a box to stand on and a parent chaperone and 12-year-old Elle Morgan can be found at clubs throughout Houston getting the party started.

The daughter of two parents who work in the club industry, Morgan fell in love with DJing at age 9 after a Tiësto concert. Her musical idols include people like Steve Aoki, Afrojack, Nervo and even some Skrillex. Now she can be found spinning at nightclubs around town and is working on an album.

“She doesn’t run amok. She’s always backstage. She’s not kickin’ it and having a good time. She’s there to work,” her father, Christopher Freeman told the Houston Chronicle’s 29-95.com. “As long as she has fun and her grades are up and she’s having fun, that’s all that matters.”

Those late nights at the club mean less time for hanging out with friends, but Morgan doesn’t mind.

“I’m happy with what I’m doing. I think I have a great career ahead of me. I just wish I had a little more free time,” she says. “But this is what I want to focus on. This is my career. Not a lot of kids have parents that are supportive of what they want. I’m lucky.”

President Obama answers questions on Reddit

by:

President Barack Obama took time out of his day to answer questions on Reddit, a popular social messaging board.

One feature of the site is the “Ask me anything” segment where users, or celebrities, agree to answer any question users post. Celebrities such as Jimmy Kimmel, Molly Ringwald, Neil Degrasse Tyson and Ron Paul have also participated in the “ask me anything” session.

Moderators confirmed that Obama was indeed the person answering questions by linking to this tweet from the president’s official Twitter account. Obama also posted a photo of himself at his computer while answering the questions.

A sample question:

“The landing of Curiosity on Mars shows Americans still care deeply about our space exploration efforts. What are your plans for NASA if you get re-elected?

Obama’s response:

“Making sure we stay at the forefront of space exploration is a big priority for my administration. The passing of Neil Armstrong this week is a reminder of the inspiration and wonder that our space program has provided in the past; the curiosity probe on mars is a reminder of what remains to be discovered. The key is to make sure that we invest in cutting edge research that can take us to the next level – so even as we continue work with the international space station, we are focused on a potential mission to a asteroid as a prelude to a manned Mars flight.”

If you want to get your question answered by the president you’ll have to act fast. Within the first ten minutes of the chat more than 200 comments were recorded. The site received so much attention it may be unavailable at times.

Drinking problem or philanthropy? Houston group plans non-profit bar

by:

Ryan Rouse, left, and Scott Repass, right, work on remodeling the bar. It is scheduled to open in about four months. ( Karen Warren / Houston Chronicle )

A group of small business, restaurant and bar owners in Houston are planning to open a new bar designed to turn patrons’ drinking into cash for local charities.

It’s called The Original OKRA Charity Saloon and 100 percent of the bar’s profit will go to a non-profit. The owners say it’s the first charity bar of its kind in the country and possibly the world, according to the Houston Chronicle. From the story:

Here is how it works: Every drink earns the drinker a chip. They take this chip to a wall of “ballot boxes” and drop it into the box of the nonprofit they believe should be sponsored next month.

In essence, OKRA is forcing nonprofits to support other nonprofits. If an organization wants to benefit from drink sales, they have to encourage their supporters to buy drinks the month before and vote, and the money earned from those drink/votes will support whatever group is being sponsored that month. Pretty ingenious philanthropy.

OKRA, which stands for Organized Kollaboration on Restaurant Affairs is made up of small business owners devoted to improving their communities.

“Our profit is actually made by a community. You know when you go into a bar that you could get that beer for half-price and drink at home. You’re coming because you want the community that bar is creating – same with restaurants and the atmosphere,” one member of the group Scott Repass said.
