What people were saying about tonight’s Oscar fashions

The Jennifers — as in Lawrence, Hudson and Aniston — dominated social media chatter during the red carpet arrivals at Sunday’s Academy Awards.

Lawrence, who went with Dior — was widely hailed as the “best dressed.” Her gown with the fitted bodice and full skirt was expected since it’s the style she’s favored all awards season. She rocked the backwards necklace — a look we haven’t seen since the 1990s but that we’re sure to see on prom-goers and maybe even brides later this season if the explosion of positive Tweets are any indication. Her soft updo and makeup was also celebrated on social media with her hairstyle showing-up with the #wantthathair hashtag which ended up trending on Twitter minutes after the arrivals began.

Hudson is one of those stars we’ve seen transform over the past year thanks for her significant weight-loss. She’s been quoted as saying she can now wearing styles and designers that just didn’t work with her frame when she was heavier. Sunday night she opted for a jewel-toned Roberto Cavalli — a dress some were calling “dull” and too modest. Others noticed she channeled Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez from past award shows by flashing her gam and earning the “lady with the leg” label at this show.

During her one-on-one with Ryan Seacrest, Hudson dished beauty tips. She told fans to “bring your lips with you,” but some were questioning if she meant “hair,” too. Her extensions/wig was panned around the world with viewers from the U.S. to Europe “disliking” the former American Idol’s ‘do.

There was a lot of “liking” going on for Jennifer Aniston’s hair, but her gown received mixed reviews thanks to its prom gown fit.

“Every woman who attended a prom in the late 90′s or early 2000′s had someone in her posse, if not herself, in that Jennifer Aniston dress,” wrote Melissa Tolosky Russom on Facebook. “And it wasn’t red carpet-worthy then, either.”

What people did love, though, was the color the former “Friends” star chose. From Zoe Saldana to Jessica Chastain to Amy Adams, so many stars settled for nudes and naturals, as is often the case at the Oscars, but Aniston rocked the red and maybe — maybe — had a certain ex husband’s girlfriend turning the unflattering color of jealousy, green.

At any awards show, the flops are more fun than the fabulously fashionable and this year there were several.

Readers were comparing Anne Hathaway’s pink Prada gown to a bib and women were calling for her to “get a bra.”

“Anne Hathaway’s nipple is the Angelina’s leg of this years,” Tweeted Susan Arbetter ‏@sarbetter

Those nips had their own twitter account within minutes of showing at the party. @HathawayNipple brought us “Anyone else feeling a little chilly?” and “#LesNipplerables“

She told fashion commentators on the red carpet she picked the dress just hours earlier. Many were speculating she did the selecting right off the rack — a “no no” for celebs — based on how uncharacteristic the whole look was for a woman who is often labeled “best dressed” at award shows.

The other disappointment? Melissa McCarthy. The star is known for her role in “Bridesmaid” and showed up looking like a mother-of-the-bride — from 1999. Her gray David Meister gown was draped and ill-fitting and had people questioning who dressed her. The negativity didn’t stop there. Her heavily teased hair was dubbed “the first tragedy of the evening.” The only winner with that one was the hairspray company — she revived AquaNet’s role in hair care, joked many on Twitter.

Bradley Cooper’s hair also had people talking. His slicked-back locks created a call for a gel-reduction. He made up for that faux pas by sporting the sweetest accessory of the night — his mom on his arm.

Holy smokes! Goodbye Pope Benedict, but hello to plenty of movie pontiffs

From CJ Lais:

With the startling news coming out of Vatican City today that Pope Benedict XVI would be stepping down in two short weeks, surprising even his closest advisors, the speculation has begun: Is he sick? Are there more Nazi allegations forthcoming? Did he get a new, better gig as the latest judge on American Idol?

If you’re having trouble processing the impact of all this, do it the way we always do here – let’s go to the movies!

Here are some of cinema’s finest (or infamous) depictions of papal progressions or pandemonium:

Man fakes potential plane crash, proposes to girlfriend

Marriage proposals, it seems, are no longer about reaching across the table during dinner and holding out a ring. No, people are getting engaged in grandiose ways. Just last night, Giuliana Rancic told us how Bill proposed in a helicopter (and don’t think for a second I didn’t want to shout out “I was proposed to soaring above the trees, tooooo:) ).

Some men bring out flash mobs for the asking and others are posting signs on guardrails over on Washington Avenue Extension. Also, a couple weeks ago we heard about that man who faked his death to propose. And then … there is Ryan Thompson. He took his girlfriend for a ride in an airplane, then said the controls weren’t working and asked her to read off the emergency procedures.

The final words on the checklist were, “Will you marry me?”

As my colleague Tim Neff asked, adorably cute, or horribly manipulative, you make the call?

I’m going with manipulative. Romantic gestures laced with jokes are one thing, but potentially scaring someone to the point that they could all but have an anxiety attack is sick and odd and the sign of someone who doesn’t understand the difference between dangerous and funny.

Apparently, she was not unimpressed, seeing as she said “yes.”

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith split?

I don’t know why, but I’m genuinely disheartened to hear when long-term couples separate. Sure, I don’t know them, but I still think it’s a bummer because, while I am the forever skeptic, I also like to believe in forever love.

This split, which In Touch is reporting based on a family friend’s account, comes after 13 years of marriage. Their publicists have not offered comment, confirmation or denial.

Details, albeit slim, on the supposed split are here, although a family member tells Radar Online that the rumors are just that, rumors, and that the couple has not broken up.
