Oprah Winfrey has a sister

by:

All last week (and this weekend) the entertainment shows were promoting a “big reveal” coming Monday from Oprah. The TV mogul’s people promised a big surprise family reunion and, as is the case with anything Oprah does, people paid attention.

Did she have a long-lost child? Or maybe a sibling? Yes, a sibling. That’s it.

Oprah, we learned, has a sister — a half sister, to be precise. The woman is from Milwaukee and has known about her connection to the Big O since 2007, but she kept it all mum. Oprah and Patricia (we are only given the woman’s first name) — who have the same birth mother — met last Thanksgiving.

Regis Philbin leaving ‘Live! With Regis and Kelly’

For many of us, “Live! With Regis and Kelly” is a mainstay in morning television. Even if you are already slaving away by 9 a.m., you’ve likely heard of the talk show duo — or watched them when you were playing hooky out sick.

I remember watching the show on snow days as a kid back when Kathie Lee Gifford was on there with her droopy-eyed laugh (I now love watching her with Hoda on the 10 o’clock hour of the Today Show) and talks of Frank, Cody and, eventually, Cassidy.

When Kelly Ripa took over for Kathie Lee back in 2001, I wasn’t sure how I’d adjust to the change. But, I soon fell in love with the New Jersey born and bred mom who seemed so natural and real she made me think “she’s probably one of the few celebrities who doesn’t have throngs of haters.”

No matter which “K” was sitting beside Regis, this has been a show that, since 1988, has been known for bringing lesser-known actors and musicians on-set early in their career and almost predicting who would make it big. Ex: Taylor Swift sat in the chair next to Regis and Kelly back when she was still a hometown girl with country star aspirations.

It was this morning that the 79-year-old Regis announced to viewers across the U.S., and even Canada, that he was leaving, saying “This will be my last year on this show. It’s been a long time, it’s been 28 years since I’ve been here. And it was the biggest thrill of my life.”

Regis is set to depart in the late summer or early fall. There is no word on who may be his successor, although Kelly Ripa’s husband, Mark Consuelos, Neil Patrick Harris and Anderson Cooper have been regular fill-ins, over the years, among others.

Yes, Kellie Pickler is married

by:

Kellie Pickler decided to skip all the pomp and circumstance surrounding your typical celebrity wedding and opting, instead, to elope in the Caribbean over the New Year’s holiday weekend.

The former “American Idol” star and country songstress married songwriter Kyle Jacobs, her boyfriend of two years.

A few days before the two said “I do” Pickler took to Twitter to declare her love for her now-husband, complete with a TwitPic.

Details on the wedding are still a secret, although I suspect we’ll being seeing something on the cover of one of the many celebrity rags (as someone who lives and dies by “People,” “US Weekly” and “Life & Style” I use that term lovingly) in the coming weeks.

Carol Anne Riddell and John Partilla: affair started second marriage

by:

Tina Fineberg for The New York Times

Timing truly is everything and sometimes — when it comes to love — the timing is just, well, wrong.

Or is it?

A New York couple is causing quite a brouhaha after their wedding profile ran in the New York Times’ Vows section this weekend. Why the controversy? The couple — a New York City television reporter and a high-powered ad executive — told the paper how their love blossomed while they were each married to someone else.

That’s right. They were each in long-term marriages, and each have children. In fact, it was the children who brought them together, sort of. You see, Riddell and Partilla met at their kids’ school. So, while the other mommies and daddies are having parent teacher conferences, it seems Riddell and Partilla may have been having a little, um, conference of their own.

The two — who, along with their spouses, were good friends before romance blossomed. That’s right, the four of them had dinners together, attended parties and hit the road for family vacations, along with their children.

They insist that the relationship was platonic, at first, yet admit to being instantly struck by one another. Eventually, they decided to leave their respective spouses — and, in turn, their children — to become an official couple.

The buzz on the ‘net is that she’s an, um, selfish individual (hey, this is a family newspaper, I need to keep it clean), and he isn’t seen as much better. But, they are in love and don’t seem to care much what the public thinks — which is fair, they shouldn’t.

What I wonder, though, is what their children think. Oh, that, and if the jilted exes can maybe find love with one another. Heck, we know they have at least once thing in common …

School board shooting video

by:

A Panama City, Florida man upset that his wife had been fired from the school system, confronted the school board about her termination. First, Clay Duke spray painted a red “V” on the wall, then he pulled out a gun and started waving it around. In the midst of it all, one board member tried — unsuccessfully — knocking the gun out of his hand.

Shots were fired, but no one was injured, although the gunman is dead after shooting himself.

The video of the incident — including the pocketbook-wielding woman — is below.

Golden Globe nominations

by:

The Golden Globes often help predict who may win an Oscar later in the year.

Many of the nods were expected — such as “The Social Network” being up for Best Motion Picture, Drama or Jesse Eisenberg’s best performance nomination for his work on that same film.

Johnny Depp was noticed for his role in two separate films and Anne Hathaway, Colin Firth and Ryan Gosling — and actor previously best known for his role in “The Notebook” — also got plenty of love.

On the TV circuit, “Glee” got plenty of love, showing up in more than one best actor and actress category.

Check out the full list of nominations here and video from the most-nominated television show below.

New Facebook profile now available

by:

Last night, while stalking a person or two playing around on Facebook, I saw some of my friends now have the new profile. I upgraded mine this morning by clicking the announcement and upgrading mine (it took .3 seconds).

I know people regularly complain whenever Facebook changes up their site. This seems silly seeing as the site, theoretically, appeals to the younger demographic — one that is supposed to be able to go with the flow and adapt to change better than, say, Betty White.

The new design seems fine. Granted, it reminds me a bit of MySpace (yes, I said MySpace), but the photos across the top, along with the pertinent details, make the site more user-friendly and the individual profiles less bogged down. Also, it’s kind of cool how you can expand on the relationship statuses. Ex: previously, we could tag our family, but now you can tag former (or current) classmates and colleagues.

For now, I have no complaints.

Why are people posting the names of alcoholic drinks on Facebook?

by:

I’ve said it before, but I have no tolerance for those silly Facebook games. I don’t care about the color of your bra or where you like to place your handbag, even if it’s raising attention for a good cause. The practice just comes across as people looking to draw attention to themselves, because of the subtlety. Now there’s another one of these goofy games going on.

It looks like it’s another attempt to raise peoples’ awareness of breast cancer where women on Facebook are tipping to their love relationships. In other words, tag the status of your relationship with a drink.

Example: Writing “tequila” means you are a single woman, while whiskey means you are a single woman with friends that won’t stop partying.

Here is the rest of the list:

Rum:I’m a touch and go woman
Champagne: I’m an engaged woman
Red Bull: I’m a woman in a relationship
Beer: I’m a married woman
Vodka: I’m the “other one”
Sprite: I’m a woman that can’t find the right man
Liquor: I’m a woman that wishes she was single.
Gin: I’m a woman that wants to get married

Oy.
