Anatomy of a $317,000 hamburger

Actually it’s not for sale at $317,000, but scientists in the Netherlands are trying to create what you might call a cruelty-free hamburger from bovine stem cells. As in, “here’s a hamburger that didn’t come from a slaughtered cow.” PETA-friendly.

It’s a market waiting to be tapped; perhaps for the anonymous person who put up the money for this  study.

The Dutch scientists plan to have this order ready in a few months.

From ABCNews.com:

According to a report in The Guardian, the project is funded by an anonymous individual with the goal of drastically cutting the number of animals raised for food. Dr. Mark Post, the researcher leading the venture at University Maastricht, told The Guardian he plans to unveil a completely lab-grown burger for taste-testing this October.

“Everybody loves meat and meat consumption is going to double in the next 40 years,” Post told ABC News last year. “In my mind, meat consumption is here to stay, and if you want to do that at a higher efficiency than what is currently done by cows and pigs, you have to explore the possibility of doing that in the lab.”

They take the stem cells and grow sheets of muscle and sheets of fat from stem cells, then when they get enough, they mince them up and make a patty.

The Associated Press reported in 2010 that Dr. Post has tried this with pork, also:

Post describes the texture of the meat as sort of like scallop, firm but a little squishy and moist. That’s because the lab meat has less protein content than conventional meat.

Several other groups in the U.S., Scandinavia and Japan are also researching ways to make meat in the laboratory, but the Dutch project is the most advanced, said Jason Matheny, who has studied alternatives to conventional meat at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore and is not involved in the Dutch research.

Sarah Palin discrediting unflattering movie

by:

Sarah Palin has dismissed the new HBO movie “Game Change” as a waste of time.

The movie, which is set to run March 10, focuses on the 2008 presidential election and depicts Palin in unflattering ways through out the movie.

According to the New York Post, Palin has released a 67-photo gallery called “Game Change we can believe in,” where she is smiling with McCain and Schmidt throughout the election to counteract the movie.

Palin has stepped up efforts to paint the movie as fiction in recent weeks, but HBO says it stands behind the movie.

“The events depicted in ‘Game Change’ have been thoroughly sourced,” HBO said yesterday in a prepared statement. “We hope that people will withhold any judgment until they have viewed the film.”

Game Change stars Ed Harris as John McCain, Woody Harrelson as campaign manager Steven Schmidt. Julianne Moore stars as Palin.

Cocaine addict racks up $120,000 in unpaid tolls, fines

by:

A recovering cocaine addict racked up $120,000 in unpaid tolls and fines in New York tunnels and bridges, but it is his 75-year-old mother who is responsible for all the debt, according to a New York Post story.

According to The Post, Peter Davis, 52, for years would drive through toll booths with his mother’s car to buy drugs in New York. Now, his mother is responsible for the unpaid fines and tolls.

“When you’re addicted like that you don’t think of he consequences. You have other things on your mind,” he told the newspaper.

His mother has said she is unable to pay the fines and Davis has now entered the PA’s hall of shame, a list of 37 individuals and companies who owe large amounts of tolls and fines.

Outrageous Valentine’s Day note at BYU goes viral

by:

On Valentine’s Day at Brigham Young University, one young student first thought the man handing her a note at a cubicle was a prospective Valentine.

But it turns out, he was calling out Brittany Molina for her outfit, which he said violated the school’s dress code, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. His note said:

“You may want to consider that what you’re wearing has a negative effect on men (and women) around you. Many people come to this university because they feel safe, morally as well as physically, here. They expect others to abide by the Honor Code that we all agreed on. Please consider your commitment to the Honor Code (which you agreed to) when dressing each day. Thank you.”

Molina shared a picture of her outfit via Twitter (@BrittanyJMo) – and it would be considered modest by any standards short of a burqa.

“Gosh dang it,” Molina wrote on Twitter. ” I’ll remember to dress in jeans, a sweatshirt and tennis shoes tomorrow. That way I don’t make people feel uncomfortable.”

The guy disappeared but Molina seemed OK, according to the HuffingtonPost:

Molina seemed to take the whole incident in stride, tweeting “i was upset at first but its actually sooo funny. whatever. hopefully the guy saw it by now!”

What was the violation? It appears to be the length of her dress, which appears to be slightly above her knees. Which are covered with tights, so not clear on what his problem was. Here’s the apparently apropos section of the Code of Honor at BYU:

A clean and well-cared-for appearance should be maintained. Clothing is inappropriate when it is sleeveless, strapless, backless, or revealing; has slits above the knee; or is form fitting. Dresses, skirts, and shorts must be knee-length or longer. Hairstyles should be clean and neat, avoiding extremes in styles or colors. Excessive ear piercing (more than one per ear) and all other body piercing are not acceptable. Shoes should be worn in all public campus areas.

I suppose tights are form-fitting. Sheesh.

Texas teacher tells brat student to “Go back to Mexico”

by:

A Texas teacher is fighting to keep her job after allegedly telling a Hispanic student to “go back to Mexico,” according to a Fox 4 News story.

Two-time “Teacher of the Year” Shirley Bunn, 63, was handing out Title 1 forms to her 8th grade class at Barnett Junior High School in Arlington, the television station reported. A disruptive student requested a Spanish version of the form, saying, “I’m Mexican. I’m Mexican.”

Bunn told the student that he could get a Spanish version in the main office, but the student continued to repeat, “I’m Mexican,” according to the television station.

Bunn responded, “[Then] go back to Mexico,” according to Fox 4.

“It was almost instantaneous. I thought, ‘God, I don’t believe that came out of my mouth,’” she told The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “It was a very, very hard week, the end of six weeks. It was late in the day. It was a Friday. We were on the third day of the first curriculum assessment and I knew it wasn’t going well. It was just an extremely bad day.”

Bunn has been placed on administrative leave as the Arlington School District reviews the case. An examiner has recommended that the school board allow Bunn to return to her job.

The school board could reject the examiner’s recommendation and fire Bunn.

Kids get caffeine fix in New York’s hippest coffee shops

The “Babyccino” is apparently a new trend in some of the hippest parts of New York.

The hot chocolate days for kids may be now considered passé for some hipster parents, who are giving their children coffee drinks, mixed with frothed milk, chocoloate or caramel. The drinks actually contain coffee — regular or decaf.

The coffee shops offering these special drinks are in Brooklyn, Prospect Heights and Greenwich Village, according to The Brooklyn Paper, which originally reported the trend.

Dr. Wendy Slusser of the Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA, told The New York Post that both decaf and regular coffee have a compound that robs kids of iron.

“Even kids with mild anemia, they might not pass out, but they might not perform as well in school or learn as well,” she said.

Airline offers you Mile-High Club membership

Always wanted to have sex on an airplane? Here’s your chance.

Flamingo Air, a private mom-and-pop operation in Cincinnati allows its customers to get busy during a one-hour flight over the Ohio city, according to WCPO-TV. They have a tiny compartment in the Cherokee Six behind the pilot made up as a bed, with champagne and chocolates.

Pilot Dave MacDonald and co-owner Sharon McGee see customers from all over the world book a $425 flight that will fly over just about any Cincinnati landmark you request.

But mostly people don’t care where they fly.

McDonald told WCPO:

“I have had a high heel in my ear once, been shot in the back of the head with a champagne cork, and thank God we wear headsets.” … He is the co-president of Flamingo Air and pilots many of the flights. And those are just some of the stories the pilots are willing to share. But many others, as well as the mile high client list, will stay in the cockpit forever.

“What goes on behind the curtain is no concern of our ours. It is a matter of professionalism, our customers expect that. If I ever wrote a book it would be great,” MacDonald said.

U.S. economy being nickeled-and-pennied to death?

by:

Too expensive to produce? (Fotolia.com)

It costs 11.2 cents to make a U.S. nickel.

Is that the dumbest thing you ever heard? Check this out: It also costs 2.4 cents to make each penny.

President Obama did promise hope and change. Hmmm. Anyway, he now wants the U.S. Treasury Department to figure out a cheaper way to make pennies and nickels, in addition to his effort to get rid of $1 coins. He spells it out in his budget, summarized by AP:

Treasury is also seeking to save money … by seeking legislation to allow the Treasury secretary to change the composition of coins to more cost-effective materials. …

Copper pennies are actually almost entirely zinc, with a 2.5 percent copper coating. Nickels, on the other hand, are mostly copper and only about a quarter nickel. (If this isn’t government thinking, I don’t know what is.)

According to CNN:

The Mint will need some time to research the best alternatives, according to administration documents.

Still, the Treasury will have a hard time making pennies pay for themselves, according to CNN Money’s Chris Isidore. As he notes, “the administrative cost of minting 4.3 billion pennies costs almost a half-cent per coin by itself, leaving precious little room to make a penny for less than a cent, no matter the raw material used.”

So what is the cheapest and best material we should we make pennies from? Wood? Recycled aluminum? Plugged nickels? Give us your suggestions in the comments.
