Nokia ‘smartphone video’ actually shot by pros in van

by:

We always think the commercials are lying to us. Now we have proof!

Nokia released its Lumia 920 phone Wednesday, and to promote the phone’s “Pureview” optical image-stabilization, it released an advertisement.

In the spot, two young lovers ride bikes by the seaside. Guy takes video of gal. Side-by-side images show “OIS OFF” and “OIS ON,” supposedly showing the benefits of the new technology.

But in a window behind the female bicyclist, we quickly see a van with a camera crew filming the scene.

OIS, nowhere near this shoot.

Here’s the video. Look for the van after the :25 mark:

Nokia didn’t back down from the controversy, penning a blog post titled “An apology is due” that said they should have labeled the video as a simulation. “Hindsight is 20/20, but we should have posted a disclaimer stating this was a representation of OIS only.” And it added a notation to the YouTube video about simulation.

The company also released a video they say shows the actual OIS in action. No van in this video, but it’s far less interesting. They should jazz it up with some bikes.

Cookie Monster Batman and other great videos

by:

This video of Batman as Cookie Monster is just ridiculous and perfect. “Watch this. Cooooookies!”

Not just a cute-dog video, a fussy-cute-bulldog-puppy video:

And this video features a hilarious case of misunderstanding. Unless your the male anchor, then it’s not so funny:

Student pretends to be celebrity, dupes people in Times Square

by:

A college student in New York has pulled a Kardashian: He feigned celebrity and the whole world bought it.

A YouTube video shows the prank pulled by Brett Cohen, a student at SUNY New Paltz. Cohen contemplates celebrity as he hires bodyguards and photographers, dresses up and has his new “handlers” start to create buzz about him in Times Square.

As he walks around, taking several photos with the gawkers, the videographers interview people who desperately try to pretend like they know who he is. He was in the Spider-Man movie? He’s a pop star? Nope, none of the above.

Cohen told the New York Daily News that while his entourage got the event started, they never gave people a firm storyline.

“The only thing I told people to say was my name,” he said. “We really wanted people to come up with their own answer.”

And they did, making a statement about the validity of celebrity. Or just falling for a mean joke.

Machine pours shot every time USA wins gold

by:

Looking for a new way to watch the Olympics? Startup company SmartThings has just the machine for you — the Patriotic Party Machine.

The fun-loving contraption automatically pours a shot each time a team USA Olympic athlete wins a medal. Using the SmartThings platform, the machine connects to the internet and dispenses the liquor upon medal announcement or manually through the SmartThings medal app.

Drinks are customized to the medal — Jack Daniels for Bronze, Jose Cuervo for Silver and Goldschläger for Gold, of course.

So let the games begin — yours, and the world’s.

Chick-fil-A: Manager goes rogue, Wendy’s fleeting support, kiss-in Friday

Fans rallied around Chick-fil-A during an Appreciation Day on Wednesday, and same-sex marriage supporters are responding with a “kiss-in” Friday. The national debate stems from Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy’s stance against gay marriage, and shows no signs of abating.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Friday’s “National Same Sex Kiss Day” is supported, though not organized, by GLAAD. The organization is also encouraging people to eat at KFC instead of Chick-fil-A.

Chick-fil-A rival Wendy’s briefly jumped into the fray when some restaurants in North Carolina and South Carolina posted signs saying “We stand with Chick-fil-A.” The company quickly asked for the signs to be changed and released a statement saying “This is one independent franchisee’s personal opinion.”

In New Hampshire, a Chick-fil-A manager might be causing his chain headaches. Anthony Picolia and the Nashua Chick-fil-A, the only one in the state, are supporting the New Hampshire Pride Fest on Aug. 11. In a statement, Picolia said “I would challenge people to come have a conversation with me before they make assumptions or boycott my restaurant.”

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, weighed in on the controversy, though she seemed uncomfortable doing it. She showed support for KFC and S.F. Mayor Ed Lee, who Tweeted recently that Chick-fil-A should “not try to come any closer” to the city than the current closest location in Fairfield.
