Sean Parker: The difficult life of the rich and famous

by:

Previous Facebook president Sean Parker (Paul Sakuma/AP)

Sean Parker, former president of Facebook, expressed dissatisfaction with the billionaire lifestyle, saying in a tweet, “I have a whole new set of problems to deal with now: security, extortion attempts, kidnapping threats, death threats, etc. Life better b4?”

Parker, whose other ventures include Napster and Spotify, seems to feel uncomfortable with the “1 percent” title that the Occupy movement has pinned on him. After using the Occupy Wall Street hash tag, the tech mogul seemed shocked that he would be heckled for being in the smaller, richer percentile. “You guys are really attacking me for being the 1%? I was broke and couch surfing just a few years ago,” Parker said.

The young tycoon said in a separate tweet that when it came to his money he was “Working on a plan to give it all away over time”. Parker started to make good on that by donating $100,000 to an independent expenditure committee on behalf of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee.

In the same day these tweets were made Parker was also paying to promote his Twitter account. “Not for me, for my companies, need to ramp up the volume for some upcoming product launches, stay tuned,” Parker said.

Halloween display thrills everyone (except the neighbors)

by:

With Halloween almost here, America’s front yards are filling up with inflatable ghosts, spray-on cobwebs, plastic graveyards and, of course, the traditional carved pumpkins.

But it’s a good bet that few have the curb appeal of the Riverside, Calif., address of YouTube user KJ92508, who has turned his humble abode into a music-blaring, strobe-blasting, electric-bill-be-damned spectacle that’s probably visible from orbit.

While thousands of lights flicker on and off, second-story jack-o’-lantern faces sing the Halloween carol “This Is Halloween” from the film “The Nightmare Before Christmas” as well as “Party Rock Anthem.”

About noon Monday, the “This Is Halloween” video was sitting on about 150,000 views. A day later, boosted by mentions on Gawker, CBS and others, it was registering 650,000 and climbing fast.

Most viewers love it. At one point the “likes” outnumbered the “dislikes” 18,533 to 71.

“The 71 “are his neighbors,” quipped one commenter.

TSA leaves freaky note in bag after finding sex toy

by:

Suprise note from the guy (or girl?) who went through your bag (Jill Filipovic / Feministe)

“This is what TSA will do when they inspect a bag you checked and find a, um, ‘personal item,’” wrote Feministe blogger Jill Filipovic after Transportation Administration luggage screeners noticed a vibrator in her bag and decided to wish her well with that.

“Get your freak on girl” is scribbled across the insert travelers find when their bag has been looked through by TSA personnel.

“Total violation of privacy, wildly inappropriate and clearly not ok, but I also just died laughing in my hotel room,” said Filpovic.

She told Boing Boing that after this incident she’s decided to retire the vibrator.

Sacramento coach resigns after showing too much

by:

A Sacramento high school football coach has resigned after pictures of him posing in a thong surfaced on Twitter.

Henry Lusk, the head coach at Kennedy High School in Sacramento, is seen taking a picture of himself in a bathroom mirror while wearing a white thong. It isn’t clear how the photo became public.

Lusk, a former tight end for the New Orleans Saints and the Miami Dolphins, resigned last Wednesday, the same day a revealing photo became public, USA Today said.

Lusk was already in hot water after eight players were kicked off his squad for brawling at an earlier game.

U.S. Capitol police investigate Onion Twitter joke

by:

One way to get on the radar of the U.S. Capitol police? Post a joke on Twitter about hostages at the Capitol building.

That’s what happened when faux news source The Onion tweeted the following message this morning:

That tweet was followed by hundreds of responses from people who felt they weren’t in on the joke or suggesting that maybe the Onion’s Twitter account had been hacked.

The Onion soon cleared up the confusion as just a prank when the following tweets were sent:

But the Twitterverse was still up in arms, with one person asking for The Onion to pull the tweets.

Gawker soon reported that Capitol police took an interest in the tweets as well, citing a USCP press release:

From: Schneider, Kimberly A.
Sent: Thursday, September 29, 2011 11:01 AM
Subject: USCP Notice: False Reporting via Twitter

It has come to our attention that recents twitter feeds are reporting false information concerning current conditions at the U.S. Capitol. Conditions at the U.S. Capitol are currently normal. There is no credibility to these stories or the twitter feeds. The U.S. Capitol Police are currently investigating the reporting.

The case of the disappearing cleavage

by:

If you think Photoshopping is reserved for flashy advertisements and glossy magazine covers, think again – even politicians can’t escape the wrath of the digital airbrush. Case in point: First-year Canadian MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan is currently at the center of a Photoshopping controversy after someone deemed her cleavage too sexy for Parliament.

Photo: House of Commons

According to Canadian blog Contrarian, an intrepid reader performed a Google image search for Sitsabaiesan and came across the thumbnail pictured at left. When the reader clicked through to Sitsabaiesan’s offical Parliament profile, he found a modified version of the headshot which had been retouched to remove her curves, pictured below. This suggests that the original photo was altered for being too hot to handle.

Photo: House of Commons

Sitsabaiesan is only in her first year on the job, but has already earned praise for her confidence and poise. Unfortunately, her talent is being overshadowed by the curiously cropped photo and its ramifications for women in the political world. Critics argue that the alteration was anti-feminist, and that that the cleavage was removed to make Sitsabaiesan appear less womanly. On the other hand, many believe that the photo was inappropriate to begin with and showed disrespect for what is admittedly a very formal workplace. Both sides of the debate have their merits, but as a working woman, I’d definitely raise an eyebrow at anyone who came into the office showing as much cleavage as Sitsabaiesan did in the original photograph. Perhaps a more conservative outfit choice would have staved off the initial distraction of the low-cut shirt, and more importantly, the subsequent Photoshopping controversy.

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith split?

I don’t know why, but I’m genuinely disheartened to hear when long-term couples separate. Sure, I don’t know them, but I still think it’s a bummer because, while I am the forever skeptic, I also like to believe in forever love.

This split, which In Touch is reporting based on a family friend’s account, comes after 13 years of marriage. Their publicists have not offered comment, confirmation or denial.

Details, albeit slim, on the supposed split are here, although a family member tells Radar Online that the rumors are just that, rumors, and that the couple has not broken up.

NASCAR pastor thanks God for sponsors and his ‘smokin’ hot wife’

by:

Pastor took his invocation inspiration from “Talladega Nights.” (Columbia Pictures)

Pastor Joe Nelms shouted a prayer thanking God for everything from the cars’ Goodyear tires to his own “smokin’ hot wife” before a NASCAR event this weekend.

Nelms is the pastor of Family Baptist Church outside of Nashville, but in this invocation he sounds more like Talladega Nights’ Ricky Bobby (or a NASCAR commercial) than a real-life man of God.

The crowd at the Nationwide Series Auto Parts 300 didn’t seem to mind.

Here’s the rip-roarin’ invocation, which ends with, “Lord I pray you bless the drivers and use them tonight. May they put on a performance worthy of this great track. In Jesus’ name, boogity boogity boogity, amen.”
