Man fakes potential plane crash, proposes to girlfriend

Marriage proposals, it seems, are no longer about reaching across the table during dinner and holding out a ring. No, people are getting engaged in grandiose ways. Just last night, Giuliana Rancic told us how Bill proposed in a helicopter (and don’t think for a second I didn’t want to shout out “I was proposed to soaring above the trees, tooooo:) ).

Some men bring out flash mobs for the asking and others are posting signs on guardrails over on Washington Avenue Extension. Also, a couple weeks ago we heard about that man who faked his death to propose. And then … there is Ryan Thompson. He took his girlfriend for a ride in an airplane, then said the controls weren’t working and asked her to read off the emergency procedures.

The final words on the checklist were, “Will you marry me?”

As my colleague Tim Neff asked, adorably cute, or horribly manipulative, you make the call?

I’m going with manipulative. Romantic gestures laced with jokes are one thing, but potentially scaring someone to the point that they could all but have an anxiety attack is sick and odd and the sign of someone who doesn’t understand the difference between dangerous and funny.

Apparently, she was not unimpressed, seeing as she said “yes.”

‘Worst death scene ever’ is a fake, original still pretty good

by:

Perhaps you’ve seen this video around today, it’s the anointed “worst/best movie death scene ever.”

The movie is early 1970s Turkish classic “Kareteci Kiz” or “Karate Girl.” According to IMDB, the complicated plot boils down to this: Woman’s husband is murdered, she goes on karate rampage against the murderers, killing them one by one.

Unfortunately, the man’s scream in the above clip appears to have been added later. As Geek Tyrant points out, the original is without scream (go to 2:10 for the death scene):

Whichever version is edited, it’s better without the screaming. Why isn’t he screaming? He feels no pain. Or too much pain?

Which version do you prefer?

Not just a cute-dog video, a fussy-cute-bulldog-puppy video:

And this video features a hilarious case of misunderstanding. Unless your the male anchor, then it’s not so funny:

Student pretends to be celebrity, dupes people in Times Square

by:

A college student in New York has pulled a Kardashian: He feigned celebrity and the whole world bought it.

A YouTube video shows the prank pulled by Brett Cohen, a student at SUNY New Paltz. Cohen contemplates celebrity as he hires bodyguards and photographers, dresses up and has his new “handlers” start to create buzz about him in Times Square.

As he walks around, taking several photos with the gawkers, the videographers interview people who desperately try to pretend like they know who he is. He was in the Spider-Man movie? He’s a pop star? Nope, none of the above.

Cohen told the New York Daily News that while his entourage got the event started, they never gave people a firm storyline.

“The only thing I told people to say was my name,” he said. “We really wanted people to come up with their own answer.”

And they did, making a statement about the validity of celebrity. Or just falling for a mean joke.

The art of romance: CDZA shows us it’s not what it used to be

by:

Musical collaboration Collective Cadenza (CDZA) brings to our listening pleasure proof that romance in the 21st century just isn’t what it used to be.

In their new musical video experiment “History of Wooing Women” they take you on a journey through the history of love songs. Starting in 1955 with “Only You” by The Platters, they move seamlessly to 2010 with Enrique Iglesias and a plethora of bleeped-out words.

What do you think? Is the music we listen to a reflection of our doomed love lifes?

Check out CDZA’s other viral and talented videos which include a musical about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and a “history of lyrics that aren’t lyrics“.
