Interracial-family Cheerios ad draws racist trolls

An adorable, innocuous Cheerios ad depicting a mixed-race family sparked a racist hate-storm online, forcing General Mills to disable YouTube comments.

Commenters (with predictably horrible grammar) called the commercial’s white mom-black dad coupling disgusting and disgraceful.

Banned from YouTube, one segregationist on Reddit decried General Mills for “shoving multiculturalism down our throats when we know it fails.”

It’s 2013, haters, and (thankfully), more than ever, mixed families are the new normal. How about you pop a chill pill and stop embarrassing yourselves by coming out on a public forum as blubbering bigots.

You know what, you guys? Racism can’t be heart healthy.

Meanwhile, multiracial families rejoiced at seeing a nice depiction of themselves in the media, in a commercial where race was a non-issue, no less.

“This commercial is a huge step for interracial families like mine who want to be seen in public together and maybe eat some heart-healthy snacks,” law student and daughter to bi-racial parents Meagan Hatcher-Mays wrote for Jezebel days after the ad debuted last week (strong language alert). “But it also validates the existence of biracial and multiracial people.”

Despite the hate simmering in those since-deleted YouTube comments, there’s been a huge positive response from multicultural America (which is most of it). So why aren’t ads like this already normal by now?

Good question. Turns out, it’s probably a money thing.

Advertising tends to lag behind the rest of society when it comes to issues like race, AdWeek answers. Brands don’t want to come off as too edgy, too political and scare off customers. That’s why spots like the Cheerios commercial stick out, even though it’s representative of more than 5.4 million couples in the U.S. (a 28 percent increase from 2000), per the latest U.S. Census Bureau count.

TV shows, on the other hand, tend to keep better pace with cultural trends. Think Crosby and Jasmine on NBC’s “Parenthood,” the historic “Star Trek” kiss, or even, way back when, Lucy and Desi on “I love Lucy.”

Though depictions of diversity in advertising are becoming more common, it’s about time to make them the new norm instead of the anomaly. Think about what a pleasant surprise it was to see a gay couple featured in that Kindle commercial – memorable, unforced, entertaining and a positive reinforcement for so many customers.

Maybe Fruit Loops can take a page from Kindle.

Alexia Jean Grey: Fro-yo server by day, superhero by night

Cosmo’s Ilana Jacqueline brings us the lovely Alexia Jean Grey: “Fro-Yo Server By Day; Superhero By Night—Welcome to Cosplay.” Read an excerpt here then head over to Cosmo for the full story:

Black, latex booty shorts.

That’s what’s in the bag Alexia Jean Grey drops on my coffee table as she walks in, fresh from a meeting of assistant directors from Supercon, one of the largest anime convention in the state.

“I hope you don’t mind,” the 21-year-old says, shrugging at the bag as she drops into an armchair. “I thought if I left them in the car they might melt.”

The shorts are for a fetish party this weekend and even though Alexia’s fallen into the scene lately, her focus these days is less on kink and more on her current gig as a professional superhero. Yup, that’s a thing.

Alexia’s a respected face in the underground industry of cosplaying—a shortened term that stands for “costume play,” a trend among the Japanese anime-watching, manga-reading, video game-playing enthusiasts who flock to multiple conventions across the country to connect, socialize, play, and display their often intricate and handmade costumes. Basically, it’s Halloween 24/7 for cosplayers. And although most aren’t “in character” all day, half the fun is being photographed by other fans in their character’s power pose.

Burger King’s hands-free Whopper holder

Burger King is striving to make it 100% easier to eat their burgers with the introduction of the totally fake, but intriguing “hands-free Whopper holder.”

BK-produced a promotional video extolling the varied and remarkable virtues of what would be a boon to carnivorous consumers — straight from the mind of Homer Simpson.

This comes at the same time the chain announced it has dropped the supplier that was selling them ground beef linked to horse meant DNA in the UK.

Video: Former president of Mexico Vicente Fox backs marijuana legalization in US

by:

At a press conference in Seattle today the former president of Mexico, Vicente Fox, backed plans in Washington and Colorado to make a legal market for marijuana in the United States.

Citing the loss of human life in his country due to the failed war on drugs and the black market that grew up in its shadows to feed the massive market for marijuana in the U.S., Fox said he hoped for an orderly and tightly regulated marijuana market here.

“We all understand that we human beings perform best in scenarios of peace and harmony. A new responsible society will bring this peace and harmony. About the loses? We cannot be worse than where we are. The war [on drugs] has been lost all along and it has been lost again and again. It’s time for a new start. It’s time for a new vision. That’s why I applaud this group,” Fox said.

The conference was organized by former Microsoft manager and now marijuana advocate Jamen Shively to announce his company’s plans to create a national brand and business out of the legal marijuana markets coming online in Washington and Colorado.

Grumpy Cat could get her own movie

by:

The cats have taken over your computers, and soon they’ll take over Hollywood.

Grumpy Cat, the perma-frowning star of many Internet memes, could now star in her own movie. The Wall Street Journal reported talent manager Ben Lashes helped Grumpy Cat’s owners negotiate a film option with Broken Road Productions this week. According to Deadline, the pitch was for a “a Garfield-like feature film” and Grumpy Cat “will be given the power of speech.”

Maybe the craziest part of the story is that Lashes is building a career out of managing famous Internet cats. He has helped Keyboard Cat’s owner make about $300,000 and recently helped sue Warner Bros. over their use of Keyboard Cat in a video game. Christopher Torres, who owns the rights to Nyan Cat, told the Wall Street Journal: “when it comes to cats, Ben knows who is going to be big.” Hint for Lashes: Check out Hamilton the Hipster Cat.

So now Lashes is banking on Grumpy Cat, real name Tardar Sauce, who lives in Arizona. Grumpy Cat was a hit at this year’s SXSW festival, has a forthcoming book and a clothing line at Hot Topic.

But not everybody is convinced Grumpy means gold. Broken Road has produced mega-flops like Adam Sandler’s “Jack and Jill,” and CNET’s Amanda Kooser writes: “I can see this squeezing every last drop of fame out of what was once a thoroughly enjoyable online phenomenon.”

Whatever happens, you know Grumpy Cat won’t like it.

‘Prancercise’ gallops online, creator is thrilled

by:
Go crazy, Prancercise! (YouTube)

Go crazy, Prancercise! (YouTube)

“Let’s stop talkin’ and do some walkin’!”

With those words, Joanna Rohrback introduced her 1980s, horse-inspired fitness creation “Prancercise” to the Internet. This week, the Internet responded, and Florida native Rohrback says she doesn’t care if people poke fun.

“Let them laugh,” Rohrback told CNBC’s Jane Wells. “Who would pay any attention to a boring, average, everyday video? I am so glad.”

If you’re not hip to Prancercise, it’s a workout system where you walk, trot and shadowbox with weights on your ankles or wrists. On YouTube, Rohrback describes it as “a springy, rhythmic way of moving forward, similar to a horse’s gait and … ideally induced by elation.” She told several media outlets this week that she came up with the idea in 1989, but was forced to shelve it due to health concerns. In 2012 she published a book, launched a website, and posted the now-sensational video.

Of course there are already spin-offs, including a perfect mashup with “You’re the Best” from “The Karate Kid” and one with a unicorn.

And lest you think Prancercising is the next “Gangnam Style,” Rohrback is ready to punch through that bubble. According the New York Daily News, she wrote “This is not to be confused with the fad ‘Gangnam Style Dance’…this is the real deal a fitness program for those serious about looking their best, not like a FAT KANGAROO!”

Fresno State QB’s ridiculous backyard shot

by:

Fresno State QB Derek Carr, the younger brother of New York Giants QB David Carr, nails a ridiculous shot on his first attempt in the family backyard over the Memorial Day weekend. You have to see it to believe it. The elder Carr filmed the whole thing.

Also, does Giants management (and their insurance company) know their player is climbing around on his roof during the offseason?
