We’ve been blessed with some great quotes during this postseason.
From John Pfohl’s relentless criticism of the referees at his game (classic in and of itself), to Harrison Taylor’s “he’d better be in the hospital” to Andre Pettway, to Barlow’s Mike D’Amato, “I didn’t fall on the ground for nothing,” on the final play of the Waterford semifinal. Or Bassick assistant Bernie Lofton‘s “See you at Gampel.”
But, Billy Lovett just trumped them all, going Joe Willie Namath on us.
“I guarantee we’re going to win a state championship!” he yelled in the aftermath of Weston’s 38-33 victory over Sacred Heart in the Class M semifinals.
Like Pfohl, Lovett’s been getting a lot of flak for this on the chat boards. And, as much as this might rankle Waterford who, frankly, deserve some credit, understand this: Coaches who hold their tongue are boring. Billy’s not boring just like Bassick’s Harrison Taylor isn’t boring.
I’m sure it’s not what Billy’s High School coach Bob Hurley would have said. But nonetheless…
I love it! I absolutely LOVETT!
Just shows you how much Weston wants this title. There’s no team that wants a title more than Weston. And Billy’s the personification of the whole team and town, who, quite honestly believes the same thing no matter what lip service you may hear.
You go BL.
Weston by 25.

Coaches who hold their tongue aren’t boring, they’re classy.
If your team has talent the talking should come from their state title banners or the scoreboard not from their coaches big mouth.
As a coach if you want to get your players excited for the big game then you tell THEM that they’re the better team, not the entire state.
Bob Hurley may have taught this coach how to dribble a basketball, but i guess he didn’t teach him how to refrain from making himself look like an in front of the state.
The way i see it no matter what the turn out of the game coach lovett looks like an idiot. If Waterford wins then he looks like an who doesn’t know when to shut up, and if waterford gets killed then he looks like an for rubbing it in Waterfords faces because they were less talented.
Going into this game i see it like this: Waterford is the classy underdog who had an amazing run in the state tournament, and Weston is the loud mouth team that won and gained no respect.
Just to give coach lovett a peice of advice as a first year coach: Let your team do the talking.
a) don’t count your chickens before they hatch. This is the first time the Waterford boys have been to a state final so I would say that this whole town is pretty pumped up about it. No one believes in this team as much as they do.
b) haven’t you ever heard of sportsmanship, you know, that thing of the past where people actually meant good game when they said it? Whoever can say comments such as those made is a showman, not a sportsman.
