Bullard-Havens 26, Cheney Tech 16

by:

We’re all sitting around the office on Saturday trying to figure out when the last time Bullard-Havens, not only won a big game, but had a winning record.

They’ve clinched one with their fifth victory in a nine-game season and, with this win over what was clearly considered one of the best in the Constitution State Conference, staked their claim as the league’s best.

Life as a football program has been incredible for Bullard-Havens and coach Pat Cicarella the last few seasons since leaving the SWC, where they were 1-89 in nine seasons.

They’re not the only ones: The new Constitution State Conference has been great for all the tech schools that otherwise wouldn’t be playing football. Now schools like Platt Tech, Cheney Tech (which broke away from East Catholic to join), Wright Tech/Stamford Academy, Sports Sciences, et. al, can enjoy the experience of playing football.

And this quick video is proof (yeah, this was the best I could do while holding an umbrella during this rainy and dreary afternoon):

Pomperaug 34, Stratford 31 (3 OT)

by:

Not that I have lens envy or anything, but I know when somebody else has got me beat on videos. There wasn’t much my puny digital camera could do up against the masterblaster, $5,000, Steven-Spielberg-unit carried by Ben Talbott of Birdseye Sports.

And, since my batteries ran out when getting videos absolutely mattered most, in OT I didn’t have anything good worth looking at anyway. Big Ben had the whole package.

So, if you weren’t there, just sit back and watch his highlight reel of this classic SWC encounter at Arum Field on Friday night.

It runs about 14 minutes long, so dim the lights, grab a box of popcorn and hit the “enlarge” button on your browser. It’s worth the peek.

By the way, unless something catastrophic happens in the SWC, it looks like this win will pretty much guarantee Pomperaug a spot in the league title game. If Pomperaug, Stratford and Masuk win out, they’ll end tied at 8-1. In that case, all head-to-heads are thrown away and it goes by CIAC playoff points.

Crazy, but true. You can call your local SWC representative to complain.

Trumbull 9, Harding 6

by:

So I’m at the Bullard-Havens game (more good stuff on that later), it goes by in a snap. And, remembering what our photographer John Galayda said on his way in, it sounded like a can’t-miss mud bath between Harding and Trumbull.

The Green Blob Cometh

by:

Heeeeeeeeeeeeere comes the Blob. Just in time for Halloween, huh? Only this one’s green and figures to cause a lot more screams the screen blob would.

Rain. Rain. Rain. It’s on its way again. And we already have postponements at schools playing on grass.

Masuk’s homecoming game against Weston has been moved to Sunday at 6
(Sunday? Yeah. They have an SWC field hockey tournament game. No guarantees the rain will be over then, either).

Bunnell’s big game with Newtown is also Sunday. But this one’s at 2:30. Which is fine with me because now I get to see it. Seeing that its a big game, Bunnell figures to get a nice gate from teams and fans of Friday night’s schedule.

No word on any others as of 3:30 this afternoon. I’ll post more biggies here the next time I get to my computer. You can also check out the CIAC’s week 7 schedule here. All the info will be updated as it becomes available.

Greenwich vs. Naples (at McMahon!?)

by:

In Week 4, while interviewing Staples players and coaches about their upcoming game against Ridgefield, Marce Petroccio and Jack McFarland tell me that Naples has been going to Greenwich’s games.

To be honest, I was surprised at first but it made sense. This was, after all, Florida football we were talking about. I didn’t think much more of it.

Almost two weeks later, during the Darien-St. Joseph game, I saw and asked the Trumbull coaches about it. Yep, they said, Naples had been at McDougall for their game against Greenwich, too. They said had actually talked to the Naples people personally.

Finally, looking for a note last week, I called to ask Rich Albonizio. “I heard that Naples coaches or people associated with the school had been scouting your games,” I said.

Not only that, Coach Al said, but taping them, too.

Fairfield Prep 33, Notre Dame-WH 0

by:

After getting absolutely buried by Cheshire 42-7 the week before, Fairfield Prep was in need of a pick-me-up Saturday.

Fairfield Prep’s Paul Finlay did most of the picking, leading the defense with a pair of interceptions and recovering a fumble during a kickoff in a 33-0 Prep victory at Alumni Stadium.

One of his picks stopped a potential Notre Dame drive, the other set up Connor Kelly‘s 32-yard touchdown run. The fumble recovery set up the second of Ryan Nolan‘s short touchdown runs which gave Prep a 14-0 halftime lead.

“Unintentional Comedy”

by:

Dear Mom,

I know you want me to stop talking about the absurdity of the 50-point rule, but this is just too juicy an example to pass up: The fourth quarter shenanigans that went on in the second half of New London’s 54-7 win over Griswold.

We’re begging you…

by:

Coaches, AD’s, please call in your scores!

Unfortunately, we don’t have enough staff to have a reporter at every game. We have to pick a couple of games to cover with our staff and then we cross our fingers that all the other schools will call in with their results.

We get just as frustrated as the parents when we don’t have the results from all the games at the end of the night.

To any players or booster clubs reading this, please ask your coaches to make sure that someone calls in the results from each and every game. If you call, and we already have the info, we’ll thank you for calling just in case.

Nice Pick (Masuk 16, Pomperaug 6)

by:

This was probably the play of last night’s Masuk-Pomperaug game.

With time running down and Pomperaug with a second and goal at the 6, Masuk’s Justin Kollman rips a pass out of the arms of Pomperaug’s Mike Leonetti to keep Pomperaug scoreless going into halftime.

Video of the thrilling end to the first half below:

Open letter to Jason Hart and Notre Dame-Fairfield

by:

We get a press release, we come to shoot photos of your game because your PR department says it would be a good photo op on homecoming. Our photographer goes, she leaves at halftime as you guys destroy Weston.

And then, you’re so excited you never call anybody with the results of your game. Not us, not anybody. Nobody knows what your “darn” score is.

So now we have photos of a game from which we don’t know the final score and we look silly. Thanks Notre Dame-Fairfield.
