Open letter to Jason Hart and Notre Dame-Fairfield

by:

We get a press release, we come to shoot photos of your game because your PR department says it would be a good photo op on homecoming. Our photographer goes, she leaves at halftime as you guys destroy Weston.

And then, you’re so excited you never call anybody with the results of your game. Not us, not anybody. Nobody knows what your “darn” score is.

So now we have photos of a game from which we don’t know the final score and we look silly. Thanks Notre Dame-Fairfield.

Just so you know: Scores and results don’t appear in the paper by magic. It takes somebody who wants to give us information. If we don’t get it from you, we’re getting it from another newspaper. So, just to be on the safe side, you should always call your game in.

But you didn’t. So, Notre Dame-Fairfield: tell your PR department this from us: That’s the last time we send anyone to shoot or cover your game until you call in the next 10 games, win or lose.

Why should we care, if you don’t?

Gulp! I will apologize in advance, I was all set to blast your paper for NOT having any info on N.D.’s homecoming game and a game where the ’64 state championship team was honored, which by the way was really a great event. As far as why the game was not called in, I can’t answer that question but I am sure glad you wrote your letter before I wrote mine.

  2. SPB says:

I’m sure it was just one big misunderstanding and not something anybody wanted to happen. But Notre Dame rarely if ever calls us with their results anyway, hence why my frustration boiled over.

People hold us accountable when we don’t get these things, and, believe me, they were mad at us Sunday. We’re equally frustrated when we exhaust all possibilities and still don’t have the information.

The worst part is, I saw Weston coach Joe Lato at the Masuk-Pomperaug game. But, by then, I had no idea that we didn’t have the score. We called everyone, to no avail.

It’s not the end of the world (and we’re not going to stop covering anyone, so disregard that statement as exaggeration) … It’s just annoying.

Now that I have had time to digest your letter to ND, it occured to me that MAYBE the ND people assumed that if you were sending someone to the game that their was no reason for them to call you? Just a thought but it appears this could be a mis-communication. Anyway I hope your paper really doesn’t penalize the kids for something they had no control over.

  4. M & L Brandstatter says:

As the parents of a player at ND, I was embarrassed to read this letter. Our son is always checking the CT Post and Max Preps for articles and stats on his team. We were frustrated not to be able to find any, and now we understand why. However, it doesn’t make sense to me that our coaches would intentionally not call in our stats after inviting you to come in the first place. I’m sure that it must be a miscommunication on our end to which you’ve shown us we need to straighten out. We thank you for taking the time to be at our game. Our boys work very hard and take alot of pride in their football team, I truly hope you wouldn’t allow your anger to penalize them.

  5. Coach Ty says:

Hey thats not a good look for ND…..i was at the game with 8 Pop warner players who were very much interested in going to ND…..but if theyre going to go and not have stats and pics its discouraging but….they still at the top of the list..

  6. George Burr says:

SPB, you know that I, as an ND hockey coach, help the Post getting Hockey scores all winter. I contacted ND and this is nothing more than a misunderstanding. The football coaches thought that a reporter and photographer were there so there wasn’t a need to call in the result. Right after the game they all went to a reception and just didn’t give this a second thought. I know as a 64 grad I was upset with the paper for dropping the ball, but now I realize that “Murphy’s Law” is at fault. Sorry for the mix-up.

spb———–thats what u get when u cover low level programs

  8. Ralph says:

Ray…I’m not an ND fan and I normally agree with your points, but was that necessary?

  9. ND Senior says:

As a senior football player at Notre Dame, I was disappointed to find out that our score was not in the paper. I got excited seeing the big picture of Tommy P.(great shot by the way) and then found nothing. I really hope you don’t cover us any less. I would love to be able to look back on all these articles years from now. Newspapers are a keepsake. I have a whole collection dating back to the preseason. I don’t know if you realize how often us Notre Dame students look at the paper. We check almost every day and through the halls all you hear the football players saying is “did you see what the paper said about us?” Or even if it isn’t about us, we just love to read about the high school sports, bringing the Sports section to school and passing it around in Homeroom. Furthermore, my grandfather was the head coach of the ’64 State Champs of Notre Dame Fairfield, Lou Saccone, and it was discouraging to see there wasn’t an article about the game. It was a very special day watching my grandfather doing the coin toss and I wanted something to remember it by. I’m sure something could be done to get the article in there, especially seeing as the night games were in there. Please don’t penalize us for a miscommunication. And as for Ray Brown.. your comment was low level.

  10. SPB says:

Well said, ND Senior. Well said.

Once again, it takes a high school student’s thoughts to bring the adults (including me) back to earth.

Again, Senior, that was my frustration talking. Every year, it seems, we go through the same thing. We send out letters imploring schools to call with their results no matter what, and then we have to pull teeth to get them. For some schools it’s easy to get the info, for others its tougher.

But never fear, there there will be no such thing as denying anybody coverage. We would never, ever, ever do that even if ND never calls in a game for the rest of its existence.

So no worries. Based on the response this incident got, I can guarantee you somebody will make a concerted effort to get every ND game into the paper every week.

Thanks again and good luck with the rest of the season.

I understand that this is a bad situation. However, holding a grudge against the team is not necessary. The kids work hard and deserve to be recognized. In the end, its all about the kids. Especially the senior players. Their last year is suppose to be a memorable one. It should not be remembered for something negative.

  12. ray brown says:

YOUR RIGHT RALPH IT WASNT NECESSARY—BUT WHEN UR A FAN OF A TOP FLIGHT PROGRAM ITS HARD TO ACCEPT GIVING FRONT PAGE TYPE EXPOSURE TO TEAMS THAT DO NOT BELONG ON THE FRONT PAGE.IF A SMALL SCHOOL WAS HAVING A DECNT YEAR IN BASKETBALL AGAINST INFERIOR COMPETITION WOULD THE POST FRONT PAGE IT AHEAD OF THE CITY SCHOOLS OR PAROCHIAL PROGRAMS?I DONT THINK SO

  13. LC says:

Hey ND Senior, Lou Saccone was my Algebra teacher 20+ years ago and he was a well-respected, great mentor and you are lucky to have him as a grandfather. I would’ve also liked to read about the game in the paper AND see a photo of Mr. Saccone! Probably the greatest athlete from the Bridgeport area….EVER! You should be very proud of him! Good luck with the rest of your season.

  14. Brian says:

Ray I’m just curious who do u root for? U seem to trash everyone else’s team as being low level. For most programs, solid years go in cycles and there is only a few teams state wide that average 9 wins every year and I have a hunch yours is not one of them. MAybe just last year for the first time ever??

  15. ray brown says:

    nah brian——————-ansonia backer

  16. Michael says:

I agree with Ray Brown–I don’t like seeing small schools having decent years against inferior competition on the front page. Therefore, I respectfully request no more Ansonia coverage.
