Pomperaug 34, Stratford 31 (3 OT)

by:

Not that I have lens envy or anything, but I know when somebody else has got me beat on videos. There wasn’t much my puny digital camera could do up against the masterblaster, $5,000, Steven-Spielberg-unit carried by Ben Talbott of Birdseye Sports.

And, since my batteries ran out when getting videos absolutely mattered most, in OT I didn’t have anything good worth looking at anyway. Big Ben had the whole package.

So, if you weren’t there, just sit back and watch his highlight reel of this classic SWC encounter at Arum Field on Friday night.

It runs about 14 minutes long, so dim the lights, grab a box of popcorn and hit the “enlarge” button on your browser. It’s worth the peek.

By the way, unless something catastrophic happens in the SWC, it looks like this win will pretty much guarantee Pomperaug a spot in the league title game. If Pomperaug, Stratford and Masuk win out, they’ll end tied at 8-1. In that case, all head-to-heads are thrown away and it goes by CIAC playoff points.

Crazy, but true. You can call your local SWC representative to complain.

It’s official. I have lens envy. Ben Talbott rocks!

cant figure stratford out ——–two division one
backs———-what they need is division one defensive players—every big game i see in papers that stratford plays there giving up tons of points

    Ray,
Maybe you should leave the Valley and see Stratford play. The Bunnell game should be better than any NVL game.

well they only gave up 17 regulation points? i’m not a stratford supporter but is that too much?

Ray, The 50 point rule distorts the scoring picture. The most any team has scored against Stratford (in regulation) is 21 points. Not a ton of points, but certainly more than Ansonia gives up. This may go to game philosophy. I’m not sure if Ansonia pulls their defensive starters when its out of hand, because some teams keep them in to preserve shut-outs and low scores. I’m sure some of the points scored against Stratford were when the starters were pulled. Stratford’s defense is a bit undersized, but their speed is impressive and they have playmakers out there. I’m not going to badmouth the NVL – I respect your league and especially Ansonia. As always – keep it civil.

There is certainly way to much back and forth verbally about NVL vs. the Fairfield county teams. Yes!!! The Waterbury schools and suburbs are generally weak. Lets not forget the Stratford/Holy Cross state title game last year. Lets give credit where its due.

you guys are constantly killing the nvl—–i saw the stratford -holy cross game which was embarrasing———-the woodlands-brookfield game
and the ndffld-ansonia rout. not to mention the immaculate losses to both ansonia and derby. please guys do your homework.

Ray, Holy Cross did blow out Stratford last year but that was probably their best team in school history with two division 1 seniors. Woodland vs. Brookfield was pretty tight. The NVL is just like every other conference.. strong at the top, weak at the bottom and decent in the middle. You mention Ansonia killing NDFFLD and Immaculate, but they’re very middle of the road SWC teams at best.

A-Rod, you hit the nail on the head and backed up exactly the point I think Ray and I were making. “The NVL IS just like every other conference…strong at the top and weak at the bottom.” The top of the football heap in the NVL as of late has been S and SS schools. We cant control enrollment size!! But in the states up against competition from every other league the NVL more than holds its own. Just looking for some acknowledgment there.
